Farm and Garden

My garden is not lookin good....The squirrels and rabbits have been relentless (they even eat the peppers!)...Now my tomatoes have caterpillars.

The neighborhood social media states how impossible it is to grow anything around here.

The only solution seems to be fullly enclose the garden in wire mesh or a greenhouse.

That sucks... I can't grow certain things due to all the rabbits. But my garden this year is bountiful. I had one year the tomato worms wiped me out... but I had bought a few heirloom plants from one place and I think that's where them came from.... I just don't buy plants from there any more.

I managed a few more cukes this morning and did 5 qts and 2 pints of zesty bread and butter pickles and 5 qts of spicy dill. I suspect if I care too... there will be another round of pickles in a couple weeks.

Those are some mighty nice buckets you put your pickles in.

Today I was going through my tomato patch... Guess what Uncle Gumps gonna be doing the rest of the day?

Bottom to top... German Queen... Mr Stripey... Golden Heirloom... Black Prince... Better Boy Red and Lemon Boy.

Make pizza sauce?

got 12 pints of salsa...

Stewing the rest for chili and spaghetti sauce.

I'll probably be doing the same thing this coming weekend.

So I ended up doing 20 pints of salsa.... still have probably 10 qts of tomatoes left. This canning thing is a labor of love and a pain in the ass. But it's gonna be good all winter long....

I think I am mowing and trimming for the year.

Now, come the leaves.

The squirrels won, everything got hacked and eaten. caging in a section next year.

YOU WANNA BOSS ME AROUND, THEN GET ME A MONKEY!

I'm out of monkeys, but do have a Marmot. Not as fun to spank, but better at picking locks.

My garden is still going... I planted a couple weeks late.

Two nights ago I picked the last zucchini for some zucchini fries and last night I picked a couple butternut squash for a big batch of butternut squash soup.

I managed 38 quarts of stewed tomatoes... 20 pints of salsa... 8 pints of tomato bacon jam from my tomato garden so far... this doesn't include what we ate and gave away. My big tomatoes are pretty much done except for a lemon boy plant... it's still loaded. My cherry tomato plants just won't stop either... tons of cherry tomatoes still on the vine. Cool daytime temps and even cooler nights will bring it to close soon. I will most likely get another 10 quarts from whats still out there. So my goal of 50 quarts was realized for the most part.

I probably still have a hundred peppers to pick and I didn't even get to the tomatillos as of yet. Still have some yellow and butternut squash also a few more cucumbers on the vine.

Overall my garden was a decent success this year

Now, come the leaves.

Eh, they go away after awhile.

Unless the wife wants to stuff the pumpkin leaf bags for halloween decor... then I get to play with my hay rake. It is easier to stuff bags out of a windrow than it is when they are just scattered.
