Ok. U can see why my gas guage didnt work. Float was gone. Just arm left. The other pic is of the plug. When u order a new gas sending unit. This is what they send for an 85. To make tgis work.break the holding tab off ur electrical snap plug. Then it will fit the new plug. I cut the wires that woulda went to in tank pump as mine dnt have one. Next plug. Vent or cap the return lineon mew sending unit. U wnt need it on a carb setup. I opted to just use rubber hose and clamps to close mine. Unit works. And gas guage reads. The new unit is lomger than old on pickup tube. But it sinstalled and did not bottom out. It seats nicely and sealed.
 
As u can see i still havent shimmed motor mounts as weve had sme cold weather in arkansas. I dnt have a shop. So when sme warmer days hit il get that done. My first warm day off i spent chaning gas sending unit. My oil sending unit still aint reading. So i ordered a new unit for 85 ranger. See if that works. The one for 96 is not working. When key is on it goes all the way to top. When u crank truck it bottoms out. I can gound it and it jumps back up to top of guage. So i ordered one for the guage in the truck. See if that works. Ive got guages in dash and after market guages. As u see in pic of cab. Both my radiator hoses are made of two hoses. Radiator slot had to be cut on bottom and top to fit in truck. But my guage nvr goes above 190. Or hasnt so far. And when i turn on the ford taurus fan it stay bottomed out on manual and dash guage.
 
Any more pics or questions il post to help others out and answer if i can. Il be posting more pics over the wkend as i get a few more things dne after work each day. Just comment or ask and il see what i can do to help
 
I have a quest for sme guys runnin carbs i am running a ford motorcraft two barrel. And gettin between 11-14 mpg. Yal think id do better goin with the edelbrock 600 carb i have?i was thinkin id get atleast 16-18mpg with a standard tranny and my 302.
 
I think i got a 15 gal tank. I went 168 miles on a tank. Granted it had alot of idle time. But saying it got 14 mpg is being very very generous. I doubt i got 13 mpg. So i need some tips to improve this.
 
To get reverse lights working. I bought sensor for 85 r1 tranny (stock transmission) and installed on r2 trans. It screwed in and my wire clipped in place. Lights work. Im fixen to start getting rid of all the wires i dnt need under the hood. Its a rats nest and i like a clean look. Still got alot of work to do and lots of mods i want to make. But its gettin there. I ran outa mny to play with so now its back to save and buy. Hopefully i dnt have any serious troubles. Motor runs good and strong. Should have oil guage fixed today and then il start gettin wires straightened out and preping for cosmetics.
 
I'm running a 3.8 air cleaner but the hole fir the carb is slightly to big. Would have used my old 2.8 one but it was lost.

Have you had to replace your hei dizzy cap yet and so where do you get a replacement? I want to assume that any v8 hei dizzy cap will work but I also want to stay blue colored too.

I'm getting 8 mpg but that's because my idle is set with the idle mix screed and nit the idle screw so going to get a vacuum giraffe and set it again.

A guy on here was getting 16mpg with a setup like mine and same trans too. I'm running an edelbrock 1403 500cfm.

I ordered a whole new hei distributor for the longer shaft. I have a blue cap to put on it. Just aint installed it yet. Frm what ive read all ford hei caps are same for the 289,302.i knw jegs shells just the cap. Try whitesperformance.com they did fast shipping and have lots to choose frm at decent price
 
My air filter and breather housing is stock frm my 2.8. As is the carb. I just bought edelbrock 600 carb. But havent installed it yet. Wanted to see if the 2 barrel got better mileage than 15. But i dnt have a choke as my stock one broke and ford no longer makes them. So its either manual choke. Junk yard. Or install 4 barrel. So il be trying diff things to increase gas mileage. Il keep notes and let u know what i get as time and progress goes forward
 
I want to increase my mileage, I miss driving my truck around lie I use to. Now I drive my tbird around that it's getting a cool 13.2mpg dye to it needs an o2 sensor and a few other things but also it has the 4.6 under the hood. Best $750 I've ever spent though.

U may also try a google search on blue hei distributor caps for 302. Thats how i found my long shaft distributor at whitesperformance. I just dne a google search for 302 longshaft hei distributor and there it was.yea im def gonna have to do sme changes for better mpg
 
So teaching the wife to drive a stick and my wiring harness being caught between tcase and frame not such a good mix. Cut wires to my fuel sending unit and interior light. Go it all fixed but had to replace fuel sending unit again cuz it shorted out....on side not. Finally got truck in the mud. Did great till carb started cuttin out. Then afterwords while driving truck home when im between 3 and 4 gear the truck tries to die. U push gas and nothing. U can pull over let it idle bout 10 sec and its ready to go again. Bout 100 yards further same thing. It dnt always do it and it only does it when im on main hwy in 3 or 4th gear. I thought ok water got in gas tank. So drained tank. Fill with supreme gas and bottle of carb injector cleaner. Same problem. Ima try fuel filters nxt. If that dnt fix it. Im clueless. But truck did awesome in mud till its started spittin and sputtering frm fuel issues.
