Fan only blows on high.

On my Explorer, the fan for the A/C will only operate on high. The previous owner said it is a resistor that is about $20 at the dealer. Does this sound like the correct part? How do I test to see if it is the resistor and not another component?

yep, time for a new resistor. its located in the blower housing on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

You may have to replace the connector to the resistor as well, ford stocks a kit to do that as well.

they seem to get leaves and junk piled up around them then they overheat. its a common problem

yeah its the resistor. mine went twice since 1999 and when you put a new one in make sure you put a little sealer on it i was told cause thats why mine went twice. On the 1999 ( which im sure is the same as the 01 its part # 4L5Z-19A706-AA

and above is the workings or the heater box side of it. Usually those spring things break or the resistor thing breaks

the napa part number for the blower resistor in your '97 is ECHBR308. any parts store should be able to look it up in their catalog or cross the above number to their number.

Got one at the local stealership, ~$20.00. Thanks for the great write up and pics. The hardest part was getting the plug out of the old resistor pack, it was rusted in there pretty good.

a little dielectric grease or petrolium jelly will keep the connection clean and prevent rust/corrosion.

too much rust and you'll start building up heat and melt the connector.

My 2000 did this also, my pig tail was also rusty but scratched it some what clean to make it work. Yes it was hard to get that connector pig tail off, with all the rust. I should get a new connector plug from the dealer.

Note: Always keep a can of PB Blaster in your truck. It works good for rusty connectors and such. Believe me, I know rust pretty good.
