Fan only blows on high.

my buddy at O'reilly's has the part number memorized, I worked there over 3 years ago and can still ramble off solenoid part numbers... S5049 ahhh!

resister

yup the solenoid not resister, was what my problem was, just got one at the junk yard now she has four blow settings like my girl :icon_bounceblue:

You learn something new everyday. I did not know a 2000 ranger had a "solenoid" for the heater fan.

Mine was the Socket/Resistor...both replaced.

Sweet!

My blower started only running on high speed a while back and then quite entirely the other day so I replaced the relay and it's still only working on high speed.

I will go buy that resistor today, great post guys, this site is helpful every time I log on!!!

check the connector on the resister also that can get corroded. use the electric grease when you put it back together

On my Explorer, the fan for the A/C will only operate on high. The previous owner said it is a resistor that is about $20 at the dealer. Does this sound like the correct part? How do I test to see if it is the resistor and not another component?

When I had to replace the heater blower I disconnected the plug that goes into the air conditioner plenum. When I got the new blower in, I forgot to plug it back in and only had high speed. After I plugged it back in I had all speeds again.

I just wanted to revive this thread, to say thanks alot guys. I have the same issue on my 2002 Ranger Edge. Fan only on high speed. Pulled the reistor, and of course the plug in was not coming out. Tried the PB and it worked on two out of the 4 connections. The rest were welded on. The plug was fried, and fell apart in my hands.
Local Ford parts only 1 mile away so I picked then up. 50s buck for the reisetor and the socket. We don't have any of the parts stores you mentioned around here.
But I knew what to look for and it went fairly easy. About 1.5 hours with a run for parts included.
Thanks again guys. Just saved me 150 in labour. My local auto electric charges 80 bucks an hour. Plus we have 13% Tax on that.

Hey guys,
on my 94 sometimes the blower stays on even when i have the switch in the off position, but not always... its not always blowing at the same power either (when in the off position). sometimes it blows high sometimes lower and sometimes not at all.... would the resistor still affect this or would it be the switch. it seems to do fine for every setting but the off position. thanks in advance

What I found out is that the reason they all work in the high position is that that bypasses the resistor. Mine did not work in position 1, 2,or 3.
While driving with the air conditioning on I turned it to postion 3 and it felt like the fan was working when the car was in motion. When I came to a stop it felt like it stopped. I realized it must be just wind from the outside blowing the cold air towards me.
It does work on all 4 positions now. On mine you can't turn the blower off using the fan switch. If you turn the heat/AC selector to the off position it will go off then.
Is that the same on the 94?

no it doesn't really act that way... i can have everything in the off position and the fan still blows, but only sometimes... i've noticed that the speed of the blower seems to change faster/slower based on the rpms that my engine is turning. thats why i feel like there is definitely an electrical problem.

My 91 Explorer did something similar. But it had to do with how fast I was driving. It I was going 70 down the freeway, it felt like it was on 2 or 3. But at a stop there was nothing.

Is this possibly what you are feeling?

yeah, its sounds real similar, but when i'm stopped it just slows down to like a 1 or less blower setting... sometimes it stops completely but usually at a stop it is barely blowing. did you ever get your problem fixed?

Sounds like somehow air is getting into your system and turning the squirrel cage by itself. Not sure if there is a flapper in there but it would be something to check.

I guess i could unplug the fan and ride around for a while to see if that is the problem.
