fairman's ranger build

thats pretty cool.

yeah i was able to get some really nice free lumber from my work built an engine stand outta 9 - 2x6's i think it worked out great, and best of all.. it was FREE! :yahoo:

i had the frame out tonight, flipped it and started grinding on the bottom side. along with some more pics i might have a POV grinder video. I'll see how that turns out, but first a few tests too see if the GoPro will film nicely attached to the grinder on 60fps 720p or 30fps 1080p. most high revving machines make the video a wavy pile of junk, and the grinder is something like 14k rpm

more to come.

trust me if you buy one, you wont be disappointed! one of the best purchases I've ever made.

as for the grinder video, seems that the camera doesn't mind the high revving grinder and filmed completely fine!, only thing is its about 25 mins of me grinding my frame with a knotted wire cup...BORING!!!!! hahaha so maybe a quick 2 min clip would do.

due to a close friend being in the hospital i haven't had any time to work on my truck, so in a few days i should have some more updates. and 06ranger, i apologize but hopefully i will have those pictures for you within a few days. its been hectic around here for the past few days, I've only had time to come on here and update at work.

Impressive attention to detail, that is going to be a really clean pickup. Hopefully your friend gets better soon.

thanks! i can be very meticulous at times! and i appreciate that, ive been spending most my time at the hospital giving support, so still no more work done on the truck. but ill be working on it this weekend.

alright, well I started working on the truck again last night. i have the first coat of DOM16 on the frame. sprayed on really nice, should be spraying the rest tonight. while that was drying i tinted one of my buddys 2011' ranger. turned out nice, have some left over that ill tint my rear window with. 5% dark smoke, i like it.

i have run into a little problem, i ordered my P/A 3" body lift which is all good, but i wanted to put poly body mounts on the truck as well. i found a set of blue ones from jamesduff, their website says that they fit 87'-7' which i figured was 87-07 right? nope, buddy called me back and said that it was a typo, and its supposed to be 87-97. so with hearing that news i started to look for another company that sells poly body mounts for the 98+ rangers. and so far no luck. am i stuck buying stock ones again?

06ranger, i know its like a month later, but i have finally taken that pic that u have asked for, ill post it here for sh*tz n' giggles but ill also pm it.

the ranchos are the 98+ 4x4 with 2.5" lift
the old garbage ones are monroe 98+ 2wd shocks
the extended bar on the ranchos are for the front axle to clear the shock but on a 2wd set up, it would serve no purpose. u can use either types on a 2wd but only the 4x4 shock on the 4wd

some more progress, underside of the frame is painted. Prepped the engine bay for paint. and tore apart the 8.8 but left the pinion and ring gear in. The gears have some wear on them but dont look too bad, but i plan on swapping them for 4.10 gears eventually. The bearings and seals seem to still be in good condition, so ill just clean everything up, paint it, and put it back together. Tonight I'll paint the top side of the frame, and the engine bay, maybe a few other things.

heres some pics

for my 31spline 8.8 I have decided to go with (and I'd like your opinion) is a full Ford Racing rebuild kit, and 4.56 Ford Racing gears. I was originally going to go with the 4.10's because this will be my DD but after reading everyones posts about what they have for gearing with a 4-cyl I think the logical choice is 4.56 since I already have 31's and plan on going with 32's or 33's.

on another note, more parts arrived, complete control arm poly bushing kit:yahoo: hopefully my motor mounts show up soon! i need to get working on this thing again!:icon_welder:

after about a month of waiting and down time. my motor mounts came in today! so as of tomorrow i will start my build. was also watching an episode of trucks, and they had a project called rolling thunder. gave me alot of ideas.

motor and tranny are in the frame, new cab mounts and 3" lift is installed, and the cab is in place. did a mock up of the new rad support, and everything lines up. if everything goes to plan i should have my front suspension and rear gears by next week. seems like all is coming together now. ill take some more pics as i go and post em up.

so im having an issue choosing what to do with my 8.8. my options are 4.10 gears, or 4.56 gears. rebuilding it with new gears, or getting a LS carrier and putting the gears on that. cant decide what gears to go to, and cant decided if its a good idea to put in a LS carrier, and where would be a good place to order everything that is in Canada, unless there isn't any. help?

4.56's and a locker FTW!!!!

+1 yep thats what i was thinking, only issue is where to order from. who has the best kits. and whats more ideal, Detroit locker, or a Powertrax lock-right locker? i would assume the Detroit would function better, but since this will be a dd the Powertrax lock-right locker may be the route i should go.
