fair price for swap??

Ive got a 2.9litre and the stock a4ld on an 87, was wonderin what you guys think would be a fair price for a shop to drop in and do all the wiring for the 4.0. and would it be best to keep my trans and transfer case..Let me know what you guys think. Id like to keep it stupid simple for maintenance purposes but i need a bigger motor but not a 5.oL. Thanks Drew

I think you should change the tranny because shift points are somewhat torque sensing, not saying that you couldn't run your trans but you would probably have a smoother transition if you did. I just did a swap for a 91 exploder 4.0 in my 88 Ranger and I would guess a resonable time rate would be 22 to 28 hours, shop rate could be 60 to 100 dollars an hour, plus your 4.0, plus tranny, plus incedentals (belts, hoses, oil, filters, tune up)number wise I would guess $3200 on the high side if you supplied the engine and trans. I worked in a shop for about 10 years, so this should be close but it is still a SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess).

I just spent about 45 min on the phone with a great shop. The mechanic told me that swapping out a 4.0 requires a compatible A4LD (I guess there are different kinds) or AOD tranny. The A4LD that is with your 2.9 will apparently fail. He talked extensively about specifics, but the bottom line is to either get a donor vehicle with motor and tranny in tact or go with the AOD.
