Fabricating anything right now?

i see.. well in a couple weeks or so. btw i'm getting that 87 i told you about, just gotta ask the nice old man if i can buy her and get her going where shes too now

I've been working on recycling a trailer I made in highschool back in 2004. It was made out of massive 2 1/2"x 5/16" angle iron all the way around. Tongue was bent because 1"x 3"x 1/8" square tubing just won't do the job, and I never knew what a "gusset" was.

The trailer landed into the hands of a close friend of mine, and he just wanted the tongue replaced. I told him, after looking over this heap of crap, that I'd replace it only if I could redo the whole thing. He wasn't for it, but he caved in and agreed to it.

Only spent $200 on the lengths of square tubing, hitch receiver, and some angle iron, but this trailer is about 90% reused and it's strong!!

Not done yet, but well on it's way;

The sides that clear the wheels were welded at work using the spray arc method, the rest is done using flux cored wire on a Hobart 140 welder. It's the cat's meow of outside welding!! :icon_thumby:

Thanks!

It's an 8ft long by 59" wide (or 5 foot if you add an inch) and 53" between the wheels. Up next is stake pockets for the custom sides, a custom made ramp style tailgate, and getting those wheel fenders mounted.

I gotta say, this one turned out pretty good! A trailer like this, not as heavy duty, would run you around $1200. Build one yourself same exact as the one for $1200: I'd say $500-$700 for all the materials, that is if you had nothing to start with. That's a big savings!

Right on, that looks really good. Now, how do you guys go about getting it registered/inspected? I know it's a PITA here.

I couldn't tell ya. All I know is he got a license on it before I decided to tear it apart. How he did, I have no idea because it was a pile of crap before. It was a hazard is what it was.

Oh well that's good, at least you've got a plate for it..now you don't have to worry about it!

I've been thinking about making a small utility trailer for hunting..but it's such a pain to get it inspected/licensed, I'm keeping my eye open on craigslist for one.

Depending on how small of one you wanted; you could get one from your nearest Northern Tool store that bolts together. Then when it's bolted together, simply weld up the joints. Now you have nice, strong trailer! Just don't forget to grind off the paint in the areas needing welds.

My dad and older brother did this with their trailers.

This is about the 1/2way point on building a flat bed for my buddys K5 Blazer/Truck cab project. All made from 2x2x1/8" tubing and it will be sheeted with 1/8" checkerplate.

Oh that's cool!

i guess were lucky...dont need plates on trailers or campers around here

Dang, that would be nice. If it touches the ground, it has to have a plate...except for bicycles.
