Hey folks,

Sad to say I sold my '94 Ranger about a little over a month ago. At 180k and 17 years old, it was time to move on. And because of the virtually identical gas mileage plus a full back-seat to put carseats in, I made the jump to full-size (found an '03 F150 Lariat with just over 100k).

Do any of you have any recommendations on F150 forums for repair info, etc.? I've been spoiled rotten by this site over the past few years, and nothing I've come across on my own holds a candle to what Jim's put together here. Just thought I'd ask what the F150 folks around here have found.

Thanks!

IIRC, we have an F-150 discussion section here, Jim tried to make a go of having a site like TRS for fullsize Fords at one point

I, like you just sold my ranger for an '07 F150...and seriously regret the decision 3 months later :P Stupid automatic pickup....

I don't think I'm far behind. I have a buyer for my truck, who approached me about buying it. Now it's a matter of finding an F-150. If I can swing the right deal, it's done.

I'm only considering because 3 kids ain't fitting in the super cab of a Ranger.

Would you guys who have made the switch mind giving me a comparison in gas mileage (also which motor on the Ranger vs. F-150)?

I went from a '97 Ranger 4.0 5 speed to a 5.4 '07 F150 Auto and I'm pretty sure I'm getting the same highway mileage...maybe more with the F150...I got 21 in the ranger. Havent figured out my new truck yet. I'll have to do the math after work this week.

Jim's full sized site is pretty cool. I've posted on there a few times, and got the help I needed. I was on f150forum.com for a while, but now it's pretty much full of douche bags, and young kids who have no mechanical knowledge. They just post about burn outs, and what back space they used, and the classic "Can I run 33's or 35's with just a t-bar crank?" ........................Yes you can. It get's really old, really quick.

I'm on fordfullsized.com now under the name C Denny Run*, and they are pretty cool. It's a great social forum, like TRS, but the tech help isn't quite like it is here. People are still very helpful though. I know the 4.6 and 5.4 quite well, so if you have any questions, PM me. If I can't answer it, I probably know someone who can.:icon_thumby:

Good luck with the new rig!

I know the 4.6 and 5.4 quite well,

There is only one thing to know about the 5.4. They both suck where spark plugs are concerned.

The old version you can't keep them in the head, and the new version you can't take them out of the head.

Traded in my 96 in about two months ago for and 07 Lariat F150. I love my new fullsize but am on the look out for a bronco II for a dedicated mudding rig. I use f150forum only because they have an dedicated iphone app.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm finding out there. I've looked at F150forum, and another similar one I can't think of the name of at the moment... But the ratio of clue-less kids to knowledgable experts is pretty lacking compared to TRS. When someone actually does post looking for help with an actual problem, there's a lot of "gee... why don't you try this?" type responses. In contrast, on TRS, within an hour you've got AllanD and 6 others (equally as qualified) telling you exactly what's wrong, why it's wrong, and how to fix it. Plus, while active forums are great, there's a lot to be said for a well-stocked tech library like TRS has. As I said, I haven't found anything like it yet. I did come across Jim's full-size site, but it doesn't look like it has much traffic (it's only a single forum, and the tech library is pretty thin still). I fully intend to stick around here as well though ;)

LOL, agreed. My somewhat limited researched indicated that you can choose between an older 2-valve 4.6/5.4 that shoots plugs, or a newer 3-valve that chews through cam phasers instead. And apparently they both love to crack their exhaust manifolds :) Seriously though, it sounds like they're both pretty damn reliable motors. Guess they all have their quirks.

Exactly. Don't get me wrong - I LOVED my Ranger, and all things being equal I'd prefer to be driving the smaller truck. 99% of the time it's a daily driver for me. And when it is being used as a truck, it's to haul around brush, mulch, firewood, somebody-or-other's furniture, etc. I really have no NEED to go to full-size. But I can't (legally) take the kids anywhere in those jump seats. And if I can go to a full-size (with plenty of room for the whole family) for essentially the same price, with the same (or better) gas mileage, I'd be a fool not to. I didn't do the math very often, but my '94 Ranger 4x4 EXT w/ the 4.0L was a bit of a hog at the pump. My new F150 has the 5.4L, but I think I'm still going to see the same mileage, or maybe even a touch better. Maybe that's wishful thinking, but I'll post back after I've driven it a while. I suppose it won't be TOO big a sin since it's still a FORD, right? ;)

I actually did run a lot of numbers before making this decision. Obviously they're not spot-on, but I used all the numbers from fueleconomy.gov, my typical driving pattern (on the low side - usually around 8k miles per year), and gas prices, and ran a side-by-side comparison for an '06 Ranger 4.0, an F150 4.6, and an F150 5.4. I noticed some rounding errors on the fueleconomy.gov site so it's far from perfect, but the numbers worked out showing that my monthly fuel costs would be EXACTLY the same for the 4.0 Ranger and 4.6 F150. I think the 5.4 F150 came out to $6 more per month, or something ridiculous like that.

I also ran some repair cost numbers - I just hopped on autozone's site to use as a common reference point, and looked up part costs for a few common items (brake pads, rotors, battery, spark plugs, etc.). The F150 parts obviously cost a bit more, but the difference wasn't as large as I was expecting.

I'm not trying to convert anyone - as I said I think I'd rather be driving the Ranger :) But the results were rather surprising to me.

Mind if I ask why? Just wondering what I should be looking out for...

I AM gonna miss my 5spd..... I'm 31 years old, this will be my 5th personal vehicle (not counting my wife's vehicles), and will be the first automatic. She can't (well she can - poorly, but she won't) drive stick, and made it clear this one had to be an auto. At least it's got a manual t-case so there's still a shifter of some sort there :)

Only thing you'll hate with the 5.4 is the city mpg.

I went to a full size (still have the Ranger and BIIs around though) a couple years ago since I use the truck for work (construction) and when it got to the point that I had to be artful how I piled things in the bed to make sure it all stayed there... I knew it was time to upgrade.

But I didn't even look at anything newer than a 95, I have no love for the newer motors. What it came down to was a '95 F-150 4x4 with the 300-6 motor (long live the mighty 4.9!) and a '94 F-250 extended cab with a 7.3 non turbo. Kinda wish I would have bought the diesel but it needed some work right from the start and I was afraid of running out of cash before it was good to go. Of course, the F-150 ended up taking me to the cleaners trying to keep it on the road (clutch went out about two months after I bought it), but....

I was getting about 15 mpg with it last year, but now I'm down around 13 with a bunch of new parts (I suspect the ethanol content in the gas around here has gone up, it takes 89 octane to get to 13, with 87 octane I'm about a mile and a half less). But I have a love for the mighty 300, that engine is built like a tank. I pulled about a 30' tall oak tree out with it not long after I got it - put a strap about 10' up in the tree, yanked it in 4lo with the front hubs unlocked and figured I'd just ease into it and see what happened.....

Not really paying attention to the tree at first, figured that I'd feel when the strap got tight.....

Man, I didn't think that strap was that long.....

Ahh, there is the tug of the strap coming.... WTF!!

Yea.... when I felt the strap get tight it apparently was the SECOND time I pulled the slack out of the strap.... the tree was on the ground behind me by that point, lol.

Only thing you'll hate with the 5.4 is the city mpg.

It isn't so much that, it is the effort of starting and stopping 2.5 tons of iron and plastic. Neither of the other two engines are much if any better at it (and forget the old pushrod engines too)

On stock rubber my '02 5.4 ext cab shortbox would get 18-19mpg on the highway, I love the darn thing.

Aside from brakes and tires the only expense the thing has had is rust on the bottom of the doors and a $40 coilpack from my stupid self burying it broadside overnight in a blizzard. I got it with 25k 6 years ago, now it has 90k on it.

For the people stuck on a manual, they were available with the 4.2 and 4.6. Pick whatever engine you want, they all get about the same milage.
