extended radius arm build up


multiple passes? or is it a tighter fit than that? it just looks like it would need a sleeve of some sort

Well, the threaded stud is welded inside of a 'sleeve' on the stock arm. I just left the stud welded to that sleeve, and cut the arm apart right where the stud ended, if you have an arm at your side you'll see what I'm talking about. Looks at Junkie's car domain, he has some better pics of it. And yes, multiple passes.
 


It's about a 3/32" gap between the endpiece and tube (you can see it in the hole for the plug-weld). I welded it in with a single pass no problem.
 
just picked up 4' of .25x2 DOM today hope to get to these in the next week or so. Ill post pics when I make some progress.
I will also be fabricating my own mounts

So the whole inner part isn't just sitting inside there unsupported (2 welds opposite each other).
 
Good stuff guys, im familiar with tubing some what. but wat does DOM stand for?

Thanks for the info, is that your standard tubing or is there various tube types other then DOM, i know theres also square but im guessing the DOM sand for the way it is made?... i know there's various alloys, like aluminum chromoly etc
 
makes sense you did say there was a slight gap between the two.
junkie on your mounts what did you use for the "eye" that the rad arm runs through...looks like part of the stock mount?
good .25 plate should be fine?
 
DOM is not necessarily Chrome-moly alloy. DOM can be mild steel as well, it's just how the tube was made. All tube starts out as a flat plate, it is then rolled and welded. Most tubing used for this type of stuff will be Hot Rolled Electric Welded (HREW). TO make DOM tubing, HREW is then drawn over a mandrel which is a cold working process. This increases the dislocations in the metal structure which increases tensile strength. There is also Seamless tubing and it is just that.
