Ive heard people taking the supercharger out of an explorer and swapping it into their ranger. Is this possible on a 4.0L. Direct swap in or im sure theres modifications? Also would there be better gas milage? :c-n:

There are supercharge kits availible for for the 4.0 explorer. They are out of production for the OHV, but they still make them for the SOHC. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work on a ranger as it's nearly the exact same vehicle as an explorer. As for gas mileage, it's definately not going to help!

No, your gas mileage would not be better. With the additional power you are going to keep your foot in it. Even if you feather it, it will still take a little more fuel. shady

I just wish I had the extra $4k to get ahold of that kit. man that would be fun! :3gears:

Does anyone know where you can find the OHV supercharger?

would a supercharger hurt or help with hauling stuff in the bed? Like 30 2x4;s?

That boosthead.com link above shows that their kit will work on both OHV and SOHC engines. just have to put in your year, make and model in the boxes at the top of the page

iv wondered about super charging mine, but thought it would more worth it to just put in a v8 instead of possibly blowing the bottom out of the v6, but some of that decision was based on the fact that i have never found a supercharger that would remotely come close to working with my 2.9. if there are super chargers out there for it though i would seriously concider that as an alternetave.

Up to 525 hp on a built 4.0. Man that'd be sweet. Sure you'd probably be blowing head gaskets left and right but it'd be awesome to smoke those rice burners while running 35s.

I have an older kit for the 4.0 OHV Paxton supercharger kit I will be selling soon. The Paxton SN92 is still bolted on my 92 Ranger that I bought a few weeks ago. It was unhooked when i bought it. I put the belt on for a test drive but the whine is louder than it should be from what I was told by a forum member with alot of experience with the 4.0 engines. Rebuild kits run $449. Will take pics when i get all of the hardware off the truck.

What suprises me is that nobody has ever taken up my sickest idea of all time....

Take a 4.0 block and a 2.9 crank turned 010/010 to the the 4.0 spec,
have custom rods and pistons fitted into it.

This would produce a low compression 3.3 liter V6 with ENORMOUS boost tolerance.

built as an OHV (the SOHC involves crank snout differences)
"Out of the box" with stock 4.0 camshaft it should produce 330-ish at 15psi.

Of course for a lot less money you could build a 5.0 or 5.8 to do the same thing and wouldn't be peppering innicent bystanders with shrapnel from your exploding transmissions. (please note the use of the PLURAL here)
