exhaust on a 4.0, 3.0 and 2.3

Not at all. I'm breaking the law continuously! That makes me the least important person here.

i wish the OP would've posted some sound clips of all of them :) I've got the quietest, cheapest exhuast my local muffler shop had and a modified intake. I love how you can hear the motor over the exhaust. I think my 2.3 sounds better than any of those so-called rice rockets. quiet exhaust on a 4 banger= good sound. IN MY OPINION! :D
p.s. only reason i changed my exhaust is cause my cat came apart and plugged everything up.

I've got a Dynomax race bullet on my '06 four-banger and it is ricey as all hell. It has gotten noticeably louder as the exhaust has broken in, too. It's funny, the first thing my wife (drives a chevy- and not the 4 banger variety) said to me when she heard my truck was, "it sounds like a honda!"

A subi WRX sounds nothing like an I4 at idle IMO. A H.O. flat-six subi at full chat sounds f*kkin' sick!

high flow cats are a gimmick on anything built in the last 30 years. they are the exact same design as the factory cat converter. if you were replacing an old pellet-style 2-way converter from the 70's, there would be a noticeable improvement...but your factory converter will already out-flow your motor.

Wicked.

Do you have access to any testing data derived using a scientific method such as Dyno Testing, or simple Flow Bench testing to support your position as stated above?

Just curious...

Thank You

Ressurection, I think that here in PA, your truck is just visual inspection for emissions equipment. (i.e. cat, muffler) So in theory, you could gut your cat and get away with it, but I wouldn't do it because: 1. Illegal if caught 2. doesn't sound tht great in my opinion. I'm just givin ya some ideas if you wanna get rid of the cat but you still need to pass emissions. Welcome BTW. Good to see somebody else from PA!

It's been years since I was on a BBS so forgive me for missing replies as I forget to look. I recently found the Subscribe To Thread option so hopefully I'll be on the ball a bit better.

Anyways thank you for the welcome. I did the cat on my 93 in 98 or 99 I think. Just your basic OEM replacement from an auto store. At the time I had a custom exhaust and wanted everything fresh. That has since rotted away from the days of being stored on grass (I later rented a barn from a buddy that had a concrete floor but this later provided other issues to deal with.. like rats!)

I have a rather restrictive setup on it now. I always wonderd why so called "truck" mufflers were nearly as long and thick as your upper leg. The displacement is smaller than alot of cars even and they don't have a canister nearly as big as they put on a truck. Maybe it's cause of amount of room available on a truck as opposed to a car.

I'd like to throw on something a bit more freer flowing but of course not obnoxious. I thought of doing the cat cause for a while it wasn't running right and I won't know about any damage to it until it's pulled and since I can't do it here with the expectations of getting everything right the first time I need to plan ahead and purchase things before I head to a shop to have them rig something up for me.

I did duels once.. missing my spare tire rack ever since. I think I'll just throw a single pipe out in front of the tire just to give it a less than OEM look. Hollowing out a cat sounds like a fun job. But like you said I don't think it would sound that great.

Wish there was a shop that would just let me sit in on things so I could be there to see what the deal is. I'd rather do things myself but after just moving I don't have garage space as of yet and I lack some tools.. and a torch for that matter.

flowmasters resonate too, that was probably your problem. they arent as bad as a hollowed cat though.

yea hollowed cats sound terrible, just loud ass sound...mine fell off lol im buying a "new" cat soon when i get the money...(p.s. not one of those "high-flo" cats either....its false advertising they all pretty much flow the same)

First let me preface this by saying I'm 100% with the crowd that believes removing a properly functioning cat gains no benefits whatsoever. In fact, I've witnessed enough before/after to see that it often hurts performance. It might gain a horsepower at the top end but it's at the expense of poor drivability through 80% of the RPM range.

However, I have a question concerning the legality. Federal law does state that it is illegal to tamper with or remove emissions equipment, but does it actually require that the equipment be present? So, is it only illegal to do the removing, but not actually the act of driving a vehicle without the equipment? If you're in a state that does not enforce emissions laws of any kind, and you own a vehicle that at one point had converters but no longer does due to the actions of a previous owner, are you legally obligated to purchase and reinstall?

It's been about 7 years since Oklahoma ceased the policy of requiring annual vehicle inspections, so without enforcement I'm seeing ever increasing numbers of catless used vehicles on the market.

thanks blackwidow that was awesome:icon_rofl:

...I'm pretty sure Wicked isn't the one closing these threads...

dude, you need to cool it and shut your mouth.

this is an open forum. i dont HAVE to do anything. even if it wasnt, your not a member of the staff and your demands have no authority 'round these parts. in short, if you dont like my posts, locate the ignore button.

ricer-definition- any HONDA with no work done to it with and auto zone 6 inch sewer pipe muffler.

"ricer" is a slang term that means whatever the user wants it to mean. in this case, it refers to ANY piped-out 4 cylinder vehicle regardless of manufacturer. i dont care if you drive a ford, honda, toyota, chevy, dodge, yugo, or what. the only good 4 cylinder is a quiet 4 cylinder. everything else screams rice.

and for your info SUBARU WRX=SEX

i dont need any "toys" to get laid.

closing forums because we talk about removing cats and such.

im not a mod. i cant close forums. try paying attention from now on.

its illegal in Most states. if you do not have emmsions in your state, then it is legal to remove your cat in that state. your gonna tell me my 62 impala ss with a 350 needs a cat? its the same deal.

its illegal to remove the cat converter in all states. if you had any clue what "federal law" meant, youd understand how this works. a '62 impala did not come with cat converters from the factory, therefore one cannot illegally remove them.

i hope you realise that your logic is so wildly flawed in most aspects of your posts that from an outside point of view you come off as somewhat of an idiot.

an x pipe helps alot with sound too right?

if your running true dual exhaust, yes, an equalizer will help with sound and performance.

An X-pipe will balance out exhaust pulses similar to how a header works at the collector. This usually helps out low end torque and midrange power. Generally, an X-pipe will give a smoother performance note because you are blending both banks' exhaust sound.
