exhaust on a 4.0, 3.0 and 2.3

i had a 93 2.3 with no cat and a 50 series flowmaster and it sounded awesome but yea in FL we do not have emissions tests so if your state does don't cut off the cat.

:icon_rofl: a 4 banger with no cat that sounded "awesome". im sure your honda buddies agreed :icon_thumby:

and again, removing the cats is illegal in ALL states. it doesnt matter if you have emissions testing or not.

fordboi, you have multiple cats because ford split the 3-way style of the mid-90's to make it more efficient. most catyletic converters consist of 3 stages. for a while those 3 stages were packed into one case. ford (and many other manufacturers) found out it was more efficient to split the stages up and place the stages that require more heat closer to the engine, and those that require less in the normal location.

Hey, blew a hole in my muffler because the weld I did was too hot(about a year ago, and didnt know how to weld a bracket onto the sheet metal right) on saturday. Borrowed my friend Dylan's welder, bought some bent pipe, and found a NEARLY new magnaflow 2.25" single in single out muffler at the wrecking yard. Welded it all up, brackets and all properly and it looks professional. It sounds unbelievable at Idle, but rev it up past about 5000RPM and It's ricey of course.

Thanks to the OP for having me prepared with such good timing:icon_thumby:.

It only took me about an hour and a half, and is as solid as any exhaust I've seen.

Pardon the newbie buttin in here. WHat about those so called "free flowing" cats that are out there like dynomax? SInce I can't go catless in PA do you think they do what they say what thay do or is all just a gimicky reproduction or any other cat you can get? Thanks!

I have no cat on my 86 ranger 2.9L and they said it was fine "legal wise" i replaced the cat (it was hollowed out anyway) with 2-1/2 inch pipe and a cherry bomb, sounds good n throaty for a 2.9

I also have a 97 ranger 2.3L that i plan on putting duals on it, probably single in dual out, after-cat system (yes it has the cat) I wanna get rid of the fart-can thats on it right now lol

how are you going to run your mouth and make fun when you never heard it if i wanted that import sound i would have bought an import.

99 model 3.0 have three cats. there are two small ones within a foot for the exhaust manifold followed by a 02 sensor on each side, then a large cat atfer the y pipe followoed by another 02 sensor. my motor is flex fuel, but the engines computer needs the info from the o2 sensors and the cats doing their job to properly manage the running of the engine. no cats is a bad idea in my book not including the fact that it is illegal to run no cats on a cat equiped truck. just my .02. if the truck didnt have them from the factory, it doesnt need them, but if it does, they are put there for a reason!

umm i OWN the truck so i would imagine i have heard my own truck, its an ok exhaust, but a tad ricey, it was already on the truck when i got it, so hey my truck, my ideas/mods. i dont call that running my mouth thank you

and as for my 86 ranger, before i get it inspected again, ill have a cat back on it, so noone get their panties in a bunch over someone ELSE's truck lol

your right, i didnt hear your truck. but ive heard SOHC 4 cylinder engines with no cats before and they sound stupid. it doesnt matter if your vehicle was an import or a domestic, a 4 banger is a 4 banger and they ALL sounds the same when you remove the converter.

maybe if you use one of those import exhaust tips on those tiny 1.6's,not mine

your right jon, your engine is somehow immune to the laws of physics. you got the only 4 banger in the world that sounded decent with the converter removed. i just wish my v-6 sounded half as decent

let me clear this up for you once and for all it sounded better with no cat and a flowmaster then any 4cyl i have ever heard that is why i said it sounded awesome because i have never heard a 4cyl sound good (except for a Subaru WRX)
