exhaust on a 4.0, 3.0 and 2.3

Cool it.

Removing the cats is illegal and we will not tolerate the discussion of illegal activity, even if your exempt from the rules.

If the talk of removing cats continues this will also be closed.

hey dudes i was looking under my new truck today which is a 03 edge 4x2 and noticed i have something like four or five cats on it while my old 99 has only two i think and their both 3.0 5spds whats up with that could i change the cat to like a simple singular cat or something?

so in other words 5 cats has the same restriction as two cats? could i ever change it to like what i had in my 99

there is roughly the same amount of catylist between the two trucks, the cat converters are just split up to increase efficiency. certain parts of the cat like to be hotter than others, hense some are placed closer to the engine. you cant legally change the configuration of the cats, and on that truck you might make your cat efficiency monitoring O2's unhappy in doing so.

why does he have 4-5 cats and my 07 only has 2

yeah thats bogus that ford did that... you need all your cats though for your efi to work properly don't you cuz your 02 sensors must have something to do with you egr right?

EGR and cat converters are unrelated. he might not even have EGR in an '03 (there was a few years there in the early '00's that ford didnt use EGR in the 3.0).

he should have 4 converters. one on each downpipe and two mains. your '07 is different because its not an '03. regulations change through the years.

they split it up to take advantage of dif amounts of heat. dif materials in the smaller seperate cats are more efficient than just one or two larger cats that "filter" out some of the stuff. the engine also reads the various levels of exhaust at the dif parts to see how much fuel is being burnt, and the computer adjusts accordingly, making the engine more efficient and the end result is a cleaner burn. interesting how it works actually, ive been reading up on it and thats the way to go, but since im running an older eec4 engine w/ a mono cat i dont have to worry about those types of engine management.

you would think an 03 would have 2 and an 07 would have 4 just because it seems like every year or couple years they add more cats.

technology in 03 wasnt as advanced as 07 and the emissions regulations changed in 04 and 08, what was good in 03 didnt meet 04 regs and 07 stuff wont pass 08 regs. 08 up models will prob have all kinds of wierd stuff, my prob is why does a stock 4 cyl stick 2wd only get 17 and 19 mpg when my 93 4x4 3.0 auto got 23 21 stock? wasnt fi supposed to make things more efficient and help our mileage not skrew it thru the tube? apparently they could care less as they try to make cali happy w/ all the new rules, they are asking for blood from a turnip and cant do it as far as emissions are concerned w/ a fuel economy balance.

no properly running 4 cylinder will get worse mileage than a v-6. ive seen 2.3/2.5 lima guys get close to 30 MPG and 2.3 duratec guys get well over 30 MPG. youll never do that with a v6.
