.............my 1988 ranger 2.3 has an exhaust leak under the intake. Is there a cross over there????? Do I just need to get an intake gasket??
It is for sure under the intake, right above the oil filter. The engine runs fine, just a bad exhaust leak there. Thanks

Could the EGR is leaking. That's about the only place the exhaust and intake meet.

............that is the only thing I could think of too. I unhooked it while running (the large tube from the exhaust) and it did not change. I just can not think of anything else under the intake??????????

You may have a blown head gasket, the egr comes too high to leak under the intake. Its either a head gasket, or the hose is cracked or falling off of the crankcase breather. It could also be a plugged pcv valve too.

...........I will let you guys know Saturday. I am going to pull the intake then. A guy at work ask me tonight if I am running with spark plug pulled out. :D ,,,,yes it is that loud............still runs ok. Thanks for the replies.

Could be the canister for the PCV has blown out of place. It is directly below the intake and will allow whatever blow-by that is supposed to be sucked into the PCV/intake to blow out as oily smoke...or simply exhaust gases...there is a hose attached to the top that can also come off...although I've never seen that...but my canister did come right out of the hole one time and I thought I had other problems till I found the canister was loose.

EDIT:

E-gads. It's been over 20 years since I worked on a 2.3 - don't listen to me. Thanks to the guy below for smacking me in the head.

Shane, that Is a water jacket! These motors take the egr from the collector of the exhaust manifold.

Thanks man.... been too long since I worked on one and I got it confused with the small block location.

Well, I work on them quite a bit...but my reading comprehension sucks sometimes...the oil catch can on the block shouldn't make loud noises so you can take my advice with a grain of cocaine...since salt is bad for the heart...

It does make quite a bit of smoke though...sometimes.

.............it was the head gasket. Number two pushed out on that side. Got it changed, runs great. :yahoo: Thanks for all the replies.

Good news! Glad you got her fixed.
