The exhaust on my truck is starting to shit the bed. A new leak formed a couple weeks ago and when i was checking out the underside, basically from y pipe back is going to need to be replaced. Soooo, I want to do somthing other than stock, but keep it LEGAL, new cats, no gutting, no straight pipe etc. I have a 93 3.0 and I am aware that it is a v-6 and wont sound like a v-8, but I don't want it to sound like a honda either. Start throwing out some ideas, pipe size, muffler type, the whole 9 yards. I'd like to not run it all the way back either. If you have pics or videos, post em up too.

Thanks:icon_cheers:

No vids but I have a '93 3.0L running a 2.5" SIDO flopro muffler. I like it a lot. Gives a nice muscle tone. You're right, a V6 will not sound like a V8 (well, maybe a chevy V8 hehe) but the flopro muffler gives off a throaty note.

no vid but ive put a lot of combos on over time on my 3.0, i found the 2 1/4 pipe the whole way does wonders for the sound. id get rid of the twin cat mess and go to a 3'' magnaflow cat (legal, cheap and full flowing.) some ppl will recommend the flowmaster, if it sounds like mine currently you dont want that. i have never run a magnaflow but they say it sounds about the same as a flowmaster. flowtech raptors are crap as ive blown one in half. turbo mufflers have good sound/flow qualities and are relatively cheap, the thrush is recommended here a lot. ive run turbo mufflers in the past, good sound but not much louder than stock. ive run fart cans b4, down low they sound chevy v8ish, above 3k they sound like monotonous 4 cylinders, you prob dont want that. glasspacks are glasspacks, very loud and in a lot of places not legal, if you get a short one its really loud, if you get a long one (18'' or better) it will be quieter but still just as annoying as straight pipe on a 4 cylinder. i personally havent heard the pro flo duals but id look into it. my next combo will be fart cans but im going to be boosting mine so i need the flow. if you want my slightly used (3 months old) super 44 flowmaster ill cut it off and send it to you for 20 bux.

I'd recommend keeping both cats the way there are as they don't hurt performance and are against the law to remove (even if you replace them with a Magnaflow cat). I really like the Dynomax race bullet I put on my truck (2 1/4" single in, single out), but it's loud. And I mean really, really loud. I also have dual SI/SO magnaflows on my chevy and love them. They don't resonate (unlike the flowmaster 40's I had on there before) and have a nice, deep and buttery smooth sound to them. If you want a nice sounding muffler that isn't stupid loud I'd recommend Magnaflow. Just my .02

did you guys not read his post? he wants to keep cats on the vehicle.

it is not against the law to replace the cats if he replaces them with a factory equivilent (in this case, a 3-way converter). id buy the stainless steel $80 cheapo from jcwhitney (dont get sucked into paying over $150 for the name-brand "high flow" cat, its exactly the same as the cheapo).

The cats that are on it now are shit, im surprised the flanges are still holding together, so they are getting replaced. If I went with this 3 way, I would only need one?

To the other guys, thanks for the info. Do you guys run all the way to the back or side exit?

Keep the ideas comming.:icon_thumby:

youll be fine with just the one converter.

where it exits is really up to you. theres easily enough room after the converter to bolt a muffler of your choice on and dump it in front of the rear tire if youd like. just avoid dumping it under the vehicle as this is bad for your vehicle, sounds terrible, and can be dangerous.

Yeah my friend did that with his 1500 and it sounds like crap. How much of a sound difference is there from doing a side exit in front of the rear tires, or running all the way to the back?

I'm not looking for it to be loud, but not stock. I'm a little picky I guess.:dunno:

outside the truck, the location of the exit wont have much effect on sound. inside the truck, the closer the exit is to the driver, the louder it will sound, due to it being closer to the drivers ear.

the only reason your buddies truck sounds bad is because his choice of muffler. dont let it scare you away from doing a before-tire exit if you enjoy the way it looks better.

i personally dont like the way a single exit out the very back looks. id rather dump it out the side...either before or after the rear tire.

No I meant that it sounds crappy because right off the muffler he has turn downs so all of the sound is under the truck. I think he's got a DI/DO Super 44. When you're outside of the truck it sounds pretty good, but riding in it it gives me a headache.

As far as the sound difference with out the back or out the side, I just wasn't sure if because there's more pipe going out the back, it would be quieter, and if there's less, it would make it louder.

I'll most likely go with out front of the passenger side rear tire, I just don't know what I'm going to use for a muffler yet.

If you side exit before tire it will be loud inside the cab since the muffler is under the seat. I ran my Flow 40 like that for awhile because I wanted more sound and see if it would make it difference in driving wise. It droned inside the cab alot, so I rerouted it behind the tire at 90 degrees with dual Flowmaster 3" tips coming off a SI/DO y-pipe at the end of the 2.5 piping. Both tips are side by side and it looks good and sounds even better since I had the OG 40 moved back to under the bed.

Have any pics?

try a summit chamberd muffler almost the same as a flow 40 and only cost like 30 bucks

my last job was a short dump b4 the axle and the muffler is behind the cab just under the bed. ill show you the pic here as i posted it the other day:

the sound is okay more reverb and noise under the bed but not so much in the cab, no deafening noises when going down the road i can have the radio off and talk on the phone while driving w/ little noise. personally my next exhaust will be straight out the back duals if i run dual turbo if i run a single it will prob be short dumped in front of the tire on the pass side. what i always wanted to do (and this is me being crazy) was get 1 1/4 pipe and make my own downpipes from the heads and run them all the way down and out in front of the tires, 6 straight pipes 3 coming out on each side, prob wouldnt sound worth a darn but it would look sweet. i may do that w/ something else one day but its always been a thought in the back of my mind. anyway, whatever you choose to do have fun w/ it!:icon_welder::headbang:

that would sound horrible and perform even worse. it would look cool though.

you could always get some faux laker pipes. jcwhitney sells them...

yeah i seen those but why wait 4-6 wks for delivery when you can get some pipe and diy or do some sweet talking to the welder at the exhaust shop?
