Exhaust Ideas.

id go with stock size pipe wit a set or dumps at the rear end. my friend has a 92 4.0 with that setup and it sounds orgasmic for a 6....

heres what i got on my 4.0l

first off, its dangerous. dumping the exhaust under the vehicle increases the risk of carbon monoxide making its way back into the cabin of the vehicle, poisoning the occupants.

second, its bad for your truck. automotive exhaust contains all kinds of corrosive chemicals, not to mention a lot of moisture. dumping all of this under the truck near exposed steel components accelerates rust.

thirdly (and this is just my personal opinion), it sounds terrible. with the sound waves trapped between the bottom of the vehicle and the roads surface, you got all kinds of unpleasent resonation frequencies throghout the RPM range, causing all your interior panels to vibrate and drowning out the sound of your music, conversation, or even the actual note of the exhaust itself. my "test" for a properly set up system is to drive over a grated bridge deck at speed. if there is no change in the decibel level in the cab between having pavement under the truck and having the bridge deck under it, then i know no sound waves are being trapped under there.

yeah i get ya with the carbon monoxide this cos thats what i always smell when the windows down, but i like it:dunno:

the sound wave crap was an issue at first but i turned the pipe outward and it sounds great now. and yes i did the same test you speak of.

IMO the crappy sound from a dumped muffler comes from using crappy mufflers in the first place.

And the corrosion and gasses thing....on my vehicles with dumps I have never seen accelerated corrosion of any of my parts and how often are you just going to be sitting in one spot with NO wind? 95% of your drive time will be when the truck is moving or sitting at a light with a nice breeze moving the gasses away.

If youre concerned about the gasses do you not stop near anyone at a stop light? Pull up to the back of someones car with your window down and youre probably inhaling more gasses than your own trucks exhaust is giving you.

Im thinking of running not a true dual but a twin ya know, and having headers like i said and have a loud muffle which im open to ideas. then just runing them streight out. mabe with some tips on it. how do you guys think that would sound on a 2.9?

ok sludge, one u dont really know anything about exhaust, dumps dump out right at the rear axle, which is under the bed, now where near the cab, so carbon monoxide poisoning is not an option. and two, the "chemicals" do nothing to the underside of the truck that it wouldnt to the backside of the truck. so maybe u might wanna research what ur talkin about before u do it and sound like an idiot.

your insulting a well respected member of the TRS. he has helped many and likely been wrong once in a while. i dont know if hes right or wrong about this subject. but, you are sounding like the "idiot"

Dru, I couldn't agree with you more. I mean christ, this is an exhaust forum.....and there's STILL bitching and name calling and all that b/s going on.....isn't that what The Tailgate is for or am I missing somthing here:icon_confused:

As for what I am going to do with my exhaust, I might check a couple junkyards and see if any of the full size trucks are running Flowmasters or Magnaflows, order a new cat, get some scrap tubing and just do a side exit infront of the passenger rear tire. Simple enough.

Now someone help out the guy with the 2.9......I can't remember who it is, but someone on here has an exhaust on their B2 and it sounds pretty good, might be HahnsB2???? If it is him, I'd ask him what he's running for a set up.

Edit, found it

are you kidding me. did you really just type this s**t. u sir are the idiot!:thefinger:

sludge knows what he is talking about.

and yes carbon monoxide poisoning is possible due to the face that the exhaust is alot closer to the cab then it would be at the bumper.
mine doesnt even make it past the door.

here is mine

i prefer side exit over dump because of the resonance that usually comes with dumping. I have all my cats and just a original 40 flowmaster. i can hear it going up through the gears, i about can't hear it at 70mph which is nice. I didn't want to bug myself going down the highway. I have my 'Cuda for that lol
