I generally wait until I need something. I have plenty of stuff that will only get used once.

Sometimes I see something that would have been useful on a previous job, buy it, then never use it.

I don't use my 3/4 drive set much but when I do it's invaluable. Does help that I have a cordless 3/4 impact! Some things like the upper radius arm pinch bolts on TTB axles are just a bitch to get out with anything else... I have an extra deep 1-1/8 socket in 3/4 drive just for that purpose.

I do buy tools here and there that I use infrequently, however I do not buy tools that I will never have the need to use, unless they are dirt cheap or free. I got a Rockwell drill press and Delta scroll saw in exchange for doing some work. I also have a finite amount of space to store tools, so I do have to consider that too.

For instance, I do not have a 60" metal brake. I would probably never use it, not have the room to store it, and would much rather spend the money on something else that I would need more.

That being said, I have picked up (free or next to free) and repaired six snowblowers over the past year. I currently have three, with a fourth I am in the middle of repairing. I have given away 2 to neighbors and friends. Sadly one needed too much work and I could not justify the parts cost for the machine I would end up with. I parted it out and kept the parts that fit another snowblower I have....

If the tool is free or nearly free, and you have the room for it, and know how to use it, it makes sense to pick it up. Maybe you might not use it, but someone you know could need it.

Then again, I may have a problem.

The only 3/4" drive tool I have is a torque wrench that came that way. I have to adapt it down for it to work with my 1/2" drive stuff.

oh I feel this thread deep in my soul....

I got my first tool set in the mid eighties, it was a Buffalo 3/8" socket set that was so lo quality that my dad gave it to me pretty much after he bought it because it was no where near the quality of his Kmart socket set lol I was probably 12 or 13. it worked well on my bike so I was happy. started buying better quality tools when I got my first job every payday. lots of late 80s and early 90s Craftsman, and my Grandpa got me a few nice sets for Christmas over the years. and I would add to it any specialty tool that I needed for car repairs or other projects around the house, and still do. some of those tools I used once, but they were under 20 bucks or in some cases under 10, so why not. I still have the special wrench for the TFI module that I bought for my 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis back in 1999. neverneeded it since, but if i get a first gen Ranger I am ready lol

When both of my grandparents passed away, I inherited some of their stuff as well. someone mentioned body hammers and dollies, I got a whole toolbox of those. I think they might have been Harbor Freight, but they havecome in handy.

You should check out Garage Gazette/Journal... (havent been on there for a few years but they had some neat old stuff and projects that the other users had.

I built a set from pawn shops 3/4" drive, I don't always use them as intended but they do a great job seating seals.

It's hard to see in the picture, right over/behind the drill press is the set of wrenches I bought while in high school, right around 1969 I think.
they are Indestro that were made in Chicago. bought them at my cousins ACE hardware. the Indestro socket sets purchased at the same time kind of wore out years ago, but I still have them.

Socket set here consists of inheritance from my father & his father (mostly ancient Craftsman), plus
various replacements\additions over decades, so a chaotic but familiar mixture.
But I'm really impressed with your Maytag ClothesDryer; badly need one of those;
tired of hauling dirty LongJohns to the creek, beating them on a rock, & hanging them in a tree to dry!
