A4LD Torque Converter Removal -- Is there an easy way?

My 1992 extended cab 2WD Ranger is running and driving fine but the transmission is making a whining noise in the forward and reverse gears whenever the lock-up is not engaged (low speeds only).

After changing the fluid and filter, I still have the same noise. I think it must be the converter that is going bad because it only happens when the converter is torque multiplying.

I am wondering if the converter is easy to replace myself? I could probably unbolt the transmission an push it back a bit to achieve this but pulling the whole transmission is more work than I want to get into.

Is it possible to re/re the converter with the 2WD transmission still in the truck?

could be a loose filter. or plugged up.. low fluid...

i would say the pump could be getting ugly

When was the last time the bands were adjusted?

It would be possible to drop the trans down and back far enough to do a torque converter, but it wouldn’t be fun, the TC isn’t exactly light and you need to pre-fill it with fluid, then when you carefully slide it in so you don’t damage the seal, you have to spin it until it seats

you can not swap a converter
