engine rotates but does not seem to want to fire

Does any one have any Ideas on what it could be Here's A list of things I have done...last fall thought I thought I could put on a carbed 2.8 mainifold so I had my valve covers off and my intake manifold off I pulled my distributor out and forgot to mark It I have tried the finger in the #1 spark plug trick I also cut some wires up because they fell out of the connectors And I am 90% positive that they are put together right looked through half a dozen diagrams any suggestions at all wil be greatly appreaciated besides we all know that we gottta keep chevy's in their place

I don't know really know what you meant with the electrical connections, just the part about "they fell out", what exactly fell out?

Do you have spark from the coil, and fuel getting into the cylinders? Are you getting any "pops" at all, even for just a second when you first try to start it?
