Electric Fan / Water Pump Failure

sorry I'm a relo'd yinzer I had to.

Excellent. I am a lifelong yinzer.

I'm going to head to picknpull and see if I can find one.
Do you guys have yours wired to a separate tstat? or does it run on ignition? Or by AC switch perhaps?

Mercedes C230 Kompressor fans fit the first gen core support. I just had mine on a switch as emergency backup. Regular fan is wired on an American Volt thermostat switch switch relay. Remember to put thermostatic switch in LOWER hose, not upper.

JerrySab,

Everytime I've converted from a crank shaft driven fan to an electric fan the water pump died shortly thereafter. My hypothesize is that the crank driven fan is a constant load on the water pump bearings, when it is removed the load change drastically reduces their lifespan.

I have gone as far as to always replace the water pump when changing to electric and I always advice it for the aforementioned reason.

Whether in Arizona or the Pacific Northwest, I haven't needed the fan on at all unless driving at speeds below 35mph or at a stop light.

87, 2.9L stock or rebuilt with a single 16" electric fan, engine oil cooler and an Explorer 2 row radiator.

My fans run off a painless temp switch/relay with the switch in the thermostat housing.

Don't hear much out of it unless at low speeds like gaz said. I do have the weak mechanical fan though which helps a lot.

Comparing apples to potatoes between my truck to a 2.9 though.

..or apple juice to whiskey

So. There exists a possibility that's unique to the 2.9.

I have a primary puller and two auxiliary pusher fans on mine. If I am running all three, the fans overcool the thermostat housing and prevent it from opening. Took a while to find the problem, but it exists.

A simple piece of tin over the thermostat housing fixes it.
[/QUO. U have 3 Fans on your truck?have a pic of that setup.curious how it looks

I can take one.

It looks like a junkyard puked on it.

I did the radiator theory very differently though. Bought the smallest one I could find for a 2.9, then ran a high flow thermostat and a bunch of fans. Worked out well. Thinner radiator means easier to push/pull wind through it.

Most oems prefer a single row... but they can make things fit easier as they design it to fit.

Yeah....

It's a mystery.
