EGR..General Purpose?

What is the general purpose of the EGR? I had my 94 Explorer coded and the only one that appeared is the EGR is stuck open/shut...i think the truck could run better, would the EGR play a huge role in why it has been kinda sluggish? And has anyone successfully gotten it off, stuck (rusted) on to the downtube pretty good...any helpful tips?

The EGR valve recycles a small amount of the exhaust gas to help lower the combustion temperature. This lowers NOx emissions and reduces tendency to ping.

If it is stuck open, your idle would most likely be rough. If it is stuck closed I doubt if it would effect your performance much if any. Just recently I plugged my EGR tube to help diagnose an idle problem I am having. It made no difference in the idle or performance. The good news is; the EGR must be functioning properly. The bad news is; I still don't know what the problem is.

The tube connection on my EGR valve came lose easily but it is an 02 and I live in So Cal with no salt on the roads

older rigs such as his '94 can be a little more sensitive to EGR input...or lack thereof. when you disabled your EGR, your computer recognized the problem and adjusted the engines parameters accordingly....EEC-IV isnt quite as smart and pinging and drops in mileage and power might be seen.

Could be, I am not that familiar with the older systems with EGR.

I was surprised that I didn't even get a CEL when I plugged the EGR tube. I ran it for two days like that with about 5 start ups and two drives on the freeway at 75 - 80 mph.
