my ford bronco II 2.9 l is running very rich! I cant put a load on it. It starts fine but I cant go anywhere! We replaced the co2 sensor, the coolant temp sensor and the fuel pressure regulator seems to have been replaced also.ALL the tune up parts were also replaced. It use to act up going up a steep hill and now its all the time!the engine light doesn't come on, it idles fine , I just cant give it any gas to go or it bogs and then eccelerates when I let off the throttle! I'm at a loss. Help!!!! Does anyone want to buy this piece of crap? I'm just frustrated with it! Please help with any suggestions at all cause I'm lost and confused! Also I've had the cats removed cause they were junk. It's a used truck so I dont know its history. Well , thanks for any help......Edwin

Take it that getting the codes revealed nothing??

well the 1st thought was the FPR...but that is apparently new. Still curious about the fuel pressure, what is it actually producing for PSI?

which temp sensor did your replace??...there is 2. One is just for the dash, the other provides feed back for the ECM, this is the one that would be suspect.

how is your air filter...it isn't harboring squirrels or remnants of last months mud run is it?

pretty sure that is a air temp sensor too, by the IAC.
or the MAP sensor.

do you have a needle sweep (analog) multimeter...try checking the throttle position sensor (TPS) for smooth operation, meaning no dead spots

Other than that it down to checking for vacuum leaks and or missing connections and grounds.

thanks for response. but we have done all you recomend. Is it possible that the timing chain jumped or skipped a tooth?

sure it is possible...but not probable.
more likely the clamp holding the distributor in place slipped.

or harmonic balancer has deteriorated &walked

is the timing still set on 10*btdc (with spout removed)??

What symptoms do you have thinking that it is running rich?

Pull the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator...any fuel inside of the hose? If so...reg diaphragm is ruptured causing full pump pressure 70psi + to the injectors.

Also I noticed that the second CO2 sensor between the cats was also removed when the exhaust was replaced with straight pipe with muffler on the end, would this have an effect on acceleration or the ecm? It idles fine but I can't accelerate ay all! Even my mechanic friend is at a loss. Would it even Idle good if it jumped a tooth or two? I'll putt it over to his place and we will check all you have suggested then update this in the evening. I have to feather the hell out of it just to get going and then I must stay in first cause it wont get up to 15 mph!only a idle. thanks you guys for the imput,I'll typeback with an update. thanks again.....edwin

CO2 sensor does help adjust fuel/air mix thru ECM. If you have one just dangling under the truck, then YES it can affect the engine, but NOT nessicarily by the way you describe your symptoms. Sounding more and more like a vacuum leak somewhere.

it is NOT a vacuum leak!!!but I still cant fix it. Would it even run if it jumped a tooth on timing chain? Getting madder by the day, lost my job, pawned my possesions buying these damn sensors that aren't fixing this crap and no one wants to buy it ! I dont blame them , I dont want it either! But its all we have for now. I also spent half the power bill on sensors. I NEED some helpful advice PLEASE.

Where are you located? I'd be willing to help if you are close enough. Also have a set of working sensors for this engine. Defintely make sure what you're replacing is at fault. Here's a site to help with testing sensors - http://www.fordfuelinjection.com

I'm in Helena Montana. Also , the second co2 sensor is completely gone. Was removed when the cats were cut out and straight pipe was installed, the only co2 sensor is right at the flange where exhaust pipe attaches. Could that be a problem? Will this even run if it jumped a tooth on timing gear and chain? I think it wouldn't even start let alone run! Man\o\man am I at a loss. The reference books at library mentioned an egr valve, my mechanic said my ford doesn't have one. Hey, thanks for offering your help. Wish you were in Helena.Any other suggestions? We're gonna recheck distributer for play and proper timing ect.. I'm so confused.thanks again.................edwin

ps mine is a 2.9 liter engine, just to let you know

ok the timing and all that is fine and the timing chain is nice an tight. Any commenys on tha throttle body doohicky and sensor ? I had to feather it to keep an Idle when running some tests. I'll check back soon, edwin

It's testable - one wire is a ground, one is the signal to the computer, and the other is a constant 5 volt reference. The signal to the computer typically ranges from ~.9 volts to just under 5 as you turn the throttle to WOT. Test with an analog meter for "dead" spots and to make sure it's reading in range.

Really hard to say what the problem could be - do you know anyone with a fuel pressure tester?

Pete

well thanks Pete. Yes we checked the fuel pressure , it was at 40 psi dead on , just like book at library read. Seems to me that it must be the throttle body assembly thing at the air flow intake or something major with the valves cause nothing else seems to fix it. Its about the only sensor thing I haven't replaced.Probably the most exspensive too! I deeply appreciate your and everyones responses. If it was a 70's ford I'd of had it fixed by now.remember, what ever it is it started acting up when a load was put on the throttle ( going up a steep hill ) until now when it barely holds an idle for 10 seconds or so. OK then ,I'll check again in the morning before I head out for round 6. Thanks!
