Looking at a new car for my mom. 100% getting a ford SUV. The escape is too small so it's a choice between the edge and explorer. Haven't been to the dealer yet because I like to research first. Good research is asking you weirdos. Anyone got opinions, pros and cons of either? They are pretty much the same size so which is better?

I think the explorer is still billed as a bit more "truckish" then the edge. Atleast thats how it seems.

Personally i dont like either one...but if shes not planning on towing anything i would prolly go for the edge.

They are pretty much the same size, to the backrest of the back seat. Explorers have much more space rear of the second row of seats. So much so that they usually have a 3rd row of seats back there, while the cargo area of an Edge is comparable in size to that of an Escape.

From 11 to 19 the Edge and Explorer have basically the same power train, and get similar fuel economy. Starting with 2020 the Explorer is returning to a RWD longitudinal setup, and will have an available 3.3L V6, and a plug-in-hybrid kinda deal.

They are both unit body construction and all wheel drive. So it pretty much comes down to which body style you like better.

2019 Explorers are available in both AWD and FWD. I'm not sure what prior years offer what choices.
like Adsm08 said, 2020 are available in both AWD and RWD.

A RWD base powertrains tend to be more robust and a FWD based one.

That being said, my 1999 & 2001 Honda CR-Vs were FWD based and were rock solid.

My mother is 74 so she wont be offloading or towing lol. FWD or RWD based doesn't matter to me as long as it has AWD or 4x4 for the snow.

She cares about the dumb crap (heated seats, sync system, remote start etc) I care that it'll be a reliable vehicle and be able to handle New Jersey winters.

My wife has 234k on her '08 Edge, it has needed a little TLC but it still a nice car.

Good a heated seat to heat up the chowder ?

I refuse to ride in my mother's cars. I can't stand how she drives and she freaks out when I drive. Plus she always buys effin space shuttles with so many buttons and gizmos its impossible to even figure out how to turn the wipers on. The 2013 lincoln MKX I currently own was hers, I didn't want it and I really don't like it or drive it ever unless I need to drive 5 people for some reason. She had health issues and couldn't drive it and payments were getting too much so I bought it from her and took over the payments. It's in mint condition with 13k miles. I've had it for sale for over a year but I'm asking too much and not worth it for me to come down on the price.

I have a feeling whatever I get for her will end up in my fleet eventually too. The 2020 edge and explorers are even more complex and full of stupid features than the Lincoln... ugh

Gotta admit though, the MKX is a beast in typical sloppy NJ winter roads. No ground clearance to get through heavy snow but it's AWD and crazy wide tires work great on ice and slush.

I hear you I don't like my mother's driving either ?

See also my wife's car. She wants another one but I don't think it is a good rural car. It gets hung up pretty easy.

Yup, my 2wd ranger is 100% better offroad than the lincoln. The lincoln can get high centered on a speed bump... I've actually taken my fiesta on some trails I wouldn't get through with the lincoln!
