Durasparky question

ya know i've tried the voltmeter, scan tool all of it and there are no codes present, plugs continue to look fine and the truck seems to run ok i guess. There is resistance on the mix solenoid and the air intake temp is working- tested it yesterday with a dvom. maybe i'm just not used to how gutless this turd is tho and i keep finding myself wanting more power. yea colorado emissions is dyno to. man i've herd some stories about people screwing those tests up and having to buy the customer new transmissions, diffs ect from not stopping the wheels all the way before putting automatics into park and actually seen it once.- it wasn't good for the truck or the tech running the test.

i have the old heat thing that goes around the manifold but i doubt it will work with the headers i got on the truck.-
Headers on a 4x4? Did you put them on? I'm looking for a set and the only ones I can find are for 2wd trucks or v8 swaps.

What 'd do, is test it with the old crap on. It should pass even if half of it doesn't work. Then as soon as you get home Duraspark it.

What you need to do is check the timing with the spout disconnected at 10 degrees btdc. then connect the spout and adjust your idle screws turn them all the way in snug not tite then back out 1 1/2 turns and start the truck then unplug the ICM idle control motor. if you have a vacuum guage turn the screws out for max idle or max vacuum one at a time then turn them in till either drops a little then back out then plug the idle motor back in and turn the anti deisel screw out until it is not touching the throttle lever. You might need to do that a couple of times to get the best idle. To check the knock sensor put the timing light on it while someone taps on the block next to the sensor the timing should move with the rapid tapping dont tap on the sensor they are sensitive and break real easy. The sensor will retard the timing and give you more power under a load. Use the pointer and not the round thing when timing it. when mine was running its best I had to turn the idle air screws out about 3 1/2 turns just make sure they are within 1/2 after you adjust it turn them in while counting then back out.

yea the ones i got came from another member off here and they work quite nicely- really make that old 2.8 sound like a screamer going up the CO. mountains at 4k rpms :headbang:

I have no doubt that the truck will pass rite now with everything and yes the timing is dead on and i did get those mix screws dialed in when i did the carb last year. I did find a vacuum line thats goes to the vacuum tree that was a dangler- reconnected that and the idle doesn't hunt anymore and there isn't as much of a bogging down when shifting. o well it gets from point a to b and can handle turning 5k rpms all day long.- it actually has seen 7k under my ownership and yesterday pulled 6k no probs snow wheeling. The truck has an awsome low end but the top isn't great on power but that could very well be due to having 4.88 gears. The gearing is definately off in the trans i'd imagine- there is quite a gap between first and 2nd gears and the difference between 4th and 5th is virtually unnoticable. at 65-70 on the highway its already turning 35-3700 rpm.

Sorry I misunderstood ur last post glad it`s running good it sounds like the knock sensor is working I kinna wish I had a 4 speed I guess you get better mileage also cheers

Who was it? Where did he get 'em? Did he make 'em or buy 'em?
Sorry for the 21 questions but dammit I want a set! :D

My 85 doesn't have much on the top end either. It's a hoss down low once it warms up, but I need to rebuild the carb pretty bad. I plan to ditch the whole EECIV get up and run either duraspark or MSD ignition if I ever get around to ordering a set of spiral core plug wires. I still don't even know if the box I have even works. Truck idles at about 1500 rpm, won't pull up hill for anything in 4th or 5th gear, but still gets 17mpg consistently.

THey came from Tony Raine and i'm not sure to where he got them, they appear to be professionally made but not certain.

kegs85- that appears to be just the wiring harness for duraspark. in the tech library, there is a breakdown of parts needed and all those total up to how much that harness alone costs. You can make you own harness for roughly 20-50$ depending on what you already have but then you'd need the dizzy, module, and a few other odds and ends.

is this everything i need for a duraspark...im kinda confused about what it is honestly

Go to the bone yard and get a harness from a 83-84 4 cyl ranger for 10 bucks if you can find one you can use your stock coil I actually recommend it as it makes the wiring easier and you can use the stock plugs also all you need to do is splice the green to the coil and make sure the two ignition wires are switched correct the tech library tells you all you need under duraspark conversion.
