Well, they lied... Ford gave you a cold air intake from the factory (it's not all shiny with one of them crappy cone filters) but it is cold air (comes from in front of the radiator)... A K&N intake doesn't do anything except let in more dirt and make noises...
Again - do you want a 3/4, a 4/6, a 5/7 or do you want to lay frame or rockers? It all depends on HOW FAR you want to go. A 3/4 will be the cheapest if you do it right - Beams up front and axle flip in rear - under $400 unless you can get the beams from a friend or something. Flip kit is super cheap - $50 or less.

Edit: Cold air Intake? A black-top road on a summer day down here gets about 168*F. "Cold Air Intake" kinda falls in the same category as-ahh-hmmm-"Sun-rise". Now, if they called it a "not quite as hot" air intake, I'd buy one--'cept i already got one,too.
