Dually rear end swap question

Thank you so much to everyone that have posted in this thread. I've been reading all of them but haven't had the time to reply.

The main reason I decided to go with the rear axle instead of adapters is because I'm anal and I like to do things so it look as factory as possible. Adapters would've been cheaper but I really wanted the real thing. My goal is to be able to achieve this conversion, swap the 4.0 engine with another 4.0 I have form our old explorer. After I make sure everything is working as it should, start restoring the whole truck for shows, my 18 year old is really encouraging me to do a show truck.

I couldn't find a tag but I read that these axle came with a 4.10 gearing. I'm not really familiar when it comes to work with axles but I wonder if there is a way to tell what gearing I really have there. This would be a learning experience for me.

I took some pics today of the rear end.

I'm going to re-read all the post from this thread and try to answer all your question in one post.

Thanks again for all the information you guys have been given me so far. Hope we can make this all work.

you're an inspiration to all of us, but did you have to admit owning a Luv? :icon_rofl:

They had no power whatsoever. Mine were high mileage, but I think they only came with a 1.5 L or 1.8 L or something like that, and mine were worn out. The five speed was pretty smooth, but there was nothing pushing it.

I loved the fact that the hood opened forward. The latch was broken the whole time I had the four-wheel-drive. When you hit highway speeds, which was about 55 miles an hour, the hood would start to rise up, open up and bounce around about two or 3 inches above where it was supposed to sit. I told friends that was a custom option to vent all the heat coming off the monster engine.

And I don’t remember numbers, but the thing got a bazillion miles a gallon. The 74 was the second attempt at building a mini semi, and a guy around the corner had to have it and the price got right. The same thing happened with the four-wheel-drive. I had nothing in it and another guy wanted it, the money got silly, and I let it go and bought something else I don’t remember anymore.

And yes, all painted with rustoleum…

Does that not already have a ford style flange on the pinion?

No; that's just a relapse. After which, you did man up, and picked yourself back up again.

We're here for you. (y)

I want to say that one of them was a four-speed and one of them was a five speed, but it was 1000 years ago and about 200 vehicles ago

All of this LUV talk, got me thinking, and I looked them up. Apparently Chevy sold a bazillion of them, they pointed up the research money to design their own, which became the original incarnation of the S-10.
