Hi guys, I'm just curious to find out whether an aftermarket dual exhaust system will offer more power increase than buying an aftermarket single exhaust. Is it just looks or is there a significant difference.

I won't be making the exhaust upgrade just yet so you all can go ahead and recommend any brands or ways to tackle a new exhaust....

I NEED a bit more power from this 3.0L, lol. :annoyed:

I'm doing audio upgrades before I hit the performance mods so I have plenty of time to find the best exhaust.

Thanks for any help! :icon_thumby:

They aren't true dual exhaust, they are just dual pipes after the muffler. Pretty much just for looks.

Oh, what if it's a full system and not cat-back?

I'd probably get a cat-back but still, I want to know what all is out there.

Any rec's?

True duals on a 6 cylinder would sound horrible. Like 2 3 bangers fighting eachother. A guy I worked with had true duals on his 91 4.0L......yuck.

You're pissing into the wind without dropping a good chunk of change into the 3.0. What you WANT is a SOHC 4.0.

At that point your better off with a 5.0, but that's not what he asked.
For true duals i think what Wicked had would be the best, IIRC was 2.25" form manifoldsback with an H pipe just before the mufflers, and then dual thrush glasspacks, all 100% custom work though.
Airmaster; if you just want an exhaust find the cheapest kit you can that's about 2.25" don't go any bigger then 2.5", and don't expect much more then extra noise.

My point is he bought a 3.0 then bitches about power when you could buy a 4.0 ranger...

When I was looking at Dakotas I could have bought a 3.9 but I wanted a 5.2 so I BOUGHT a 5.2. Of course I've added more power and still want more but at least I got the most powerful engine available to start out with.

Well... I'm sorry that I didn't have enough $$$$, next time I'll rob a bank before purchasing a truck, that way I can get the more powerful engine.... pfft...

I woulda got a car if I wanted right now power, the effin 4.0 isn't a world's better.

I basically want more MPGs and a little less thrashing on the 3.0. If you can help by giving me some advice, that'd be great, if not, you're not hurting me by not posting.

Many years ago people liked to put a split exhaust manifold to get true duals on in-line sixes. It had a unique sound but I thought it was on the edge of good or bad sounding. It does nothing for power and in many cases actually robbed power.

what about the R/T's

what about the R/T's
R/Ts weren't in second gens, not available with 4WD or a 5 speed :bye:

Exhaust will net you about 5HP max and maybe a touch more MPG, that's reality. Dual exhaust is a waste of money, space and weight with a V6. Without some serious coin, you're pissing into the wind. Learning to drive it would help, 3.0s like revs, when you need power, don't be affraid to rev it, it was designed for it. If you don't want to rev it, get a 4.0, it makes more low end torque than the 3.0 can ever dream of making, again, that's reality.

Thanks for the tips. :icon_thumby:

The only reason I don't like revving it is that I'll be watching my gas gauge go down. I'm 18 years old, trust me, I want to rev the shit out of it, but I also don't have a pocket load of money to spend on gas...

Yeah, I'm probably gonna get a single catback exhaust once I finish my audio upgrades.

How much would an intake do? It may allow the engine to free up so i can rev it easier...

I wouldn't waste any time or money on an intake, unless you are committed to spending time & money on a bunch of other mods. Really the intake on its own isn't going to give you any noticeable increase in power. But once you start doing other things (UDPs, catback, headers, 1.7:1 rockers, etc.) the intake may start to become a bottleneck and at that point it's definitely worth addressing.

On the cheap, you can get a Dynomax catback ($75 rebate going on right now). It's not full stainless like some of the more expensive setups, but by the time rust causes you any issues you'll be a few years older and possibly in a different financial situation. :icon_cheers:

For the intake, you can pull out the silencer "cone" that's stuck in the airbox inlet. It probably doesn't make any difference in power, but it sounds cool when you floor it, and it's free. :D

And if you start wishing you had a 4.0L, have a look at the MPG figures for the 4.0. You won't feel so bad then. :icon_thumby:

On both of my rangers 02 Edge & 03 xlt, both supercabs, flex fuel. I have a 2.5 pipe and a flowmaster 40 single exhaust with a 3 inch tip. I did some research on another ranger forum before I found out about TRS. One of the 3.0 gurus said no dual exhaust is needed, you still need a little back pressure to help maintain your torque. You open up the exhaust to much and you loose some torque. I know these engines are not built for racing or speed . I'm satisfied with the setup I have on both trucks. On the EDGE I have a DYI cold air intake, sounds a little better and breathes a little easier, the XLT I removed the intake silencer and enlarged the hole, sounds good .
