Plummed in the néw brake line. Driver side went together fine. Passenger side couldn't get tthe drum off. Beat it with the mini sledge till it popped off. Was pretty banged up so I bought a new drum. Well the new drum won't fit but the old one will. They are ten inch brakes and they are ten inch drums. The difference is the new one is 11 inch and the old one is 11 1/8.

Also I suspect this gap is why the drum won't fit. Put this side together 5 times trying to get rid of it.

The star thing at the bottom is screwed in all the way. E brake is out. I bled the brakes. Had my gf push on them with the cover off they work. I can force the new drum on with a hammer. But that's bad.

Also the spring to the right is a different size than the one in the Haynes manual. Its much shorter

Get a can of brake cleaner and hose it down while it is open to clean off gunk.

Remove the master cylinder cover to allow pressure relief.

Squeeze the brake shoes together to get the gap out.

Lube the contact points on backing plate/shoes.

If need be adjust the star washer (adjuster) to allow shorter length.

Slip drum on and adjust for a snug fit.

Reinstall cover on master cylinder.

I suspect the parking brake arm is some how keeping the shoe from seating properly or something in the slave cylinder connection to the shoe is not right.

I've had this problem too. It's a matter of looking everything over really close and seeing why it's hung up. Check the bar that runs from one side to the other, I've had it stick in the wrong position.
Good luck,
Richard

I had this trouble. The parking brake cables were frozen up, Replacing the cables was my fix. 20 bux each at Auto zone

Yep, seen it a hundred times. Parking brake cable is frozen.

the adjuster cable is partially behind the half-moon shaped cable guide.

there may be crud inside the wheel cylinder preventing the pistons from fully retracting, but I would suspect the cross bar is not seated properly.

When I did the rear brakes on my 2000, some custom fitting was needed. Filed the notches on the self adjusters for more clearance, and carefully ground away some friction material so the shoes would better match the drum.
To get a perfect fit, you can put magic marker on the drum. It will rub off on hi spots on the shoes.
Be sure to clean it off, don't want to glaze the shoes.

In my case, every thing was new less than 3k miles ago, except the cables, so that kinda nailed down the diagnosis. Another clue I was on the right track was that the old cable came out molded into the shape it had been in for 20 yrs.. The new one was cable tied into a 10" circle when I bought it. :D

Yes, I have just been throwing parts at the Rat's problems. It has needed every single one of them. :D
