downshifting

An auto doesn't go into neutral when you press on the brakes. Of course it doesn't have the same engine braking effect as a standard but at least it's something.

Also one of the reasons I hate towing anything with an auto.

Downshifting a manual transmission is not bad for it if done correctly. It can wear the syncros sooner if done with abuse. This is all up to the owner of the vehicle as to whether they want to do it or not. You certainly do not need to do it but has its advantages.

As to shifting down to first while moving because of going too slow in second gear, that again is a preference. I can take out from a stop in second gear if I wanted to but that is not good for the clutch or performance. When I want to accelerate, I want to go not chug-a-chug-a-chug like grandma. So, I select a gear that will get me going at the rate I like.
