How well do your double flairs have to be. Its my first time doing them, they look ok, Probably not professional. Talked to an old mechanic he said that if they were even close it would be fine as when you tighten the bolt it sorrt of chrushes the end and creats the seal. Does this sound right or am I going to have leaks all over.

Thanks

Try it. If it leaks, cut it off and do it again. My biggest problem was getting the damn tool to keep hold of the brake line and not push it out. As long as you double flaired (not just single flaired it) it should be good.

Thanks you would think it would be easy its not, at least for me it has been a pain in well you know. hopefully it will be done tonight and I will find out. I think the flairing is fine it just bends to the side a little bit.

I can't seem to make a double flare that looks exactly like the flares that come on the lines. Do you have a picture of what you're able to produce?

Here's what the flares look like from the factory vs. what I was cranking out:

I reduced the number of turns I was doing for the last flare and they look closer to the factory flares but they're still not exact.

Ill try and get some up. Mine look alot like yours. Did yours work ok or did they leak?

If yours look like mine I'd try another flare and when you do the second flare reduce the number of turns you make with the tool. I think I turned it 180 degrees in 1/8th turn increments to make sure I didn't put too much pressure on it.

As for leaking, I wasn't comfortable with my first tries so I cut and re-flared a bunch of times before I was happy with the results. I went to install the new line last night but couldn't get it in and ended up screwing the line up as part of my giving up process. Read: I threw the new line across the garage. I get to make a new line now.

Ok, now that you are trying I will tell you "THE great secret"
of making professional looking double flares....

IT all boils down to how well you champfer the inside and
outside of the freshly cut tube.

Get the inner and outer champfer "right" and everything else
will fall into place for you.

Instructions?

My brake lines looked like a caveman did them and they still worked.
I read the instructions wrong :icon_twisted:

Brake lines don't have to be perfect but they should be close. Beyond getting it setup properly the only trick is to know when to stop on the second flare. At first it will crush easily then it will get hard to turn the handle. Turn it another 1/8 to 1/4 turn and you should get results like this.

Clean the burr on the inside and outside of the tubing at the cut to a small angle before you try to flare it.

I've done several brake line repairs and single flairs have worked fine, no leaks going on several thousands of miles now.

IMO just make sure it's even all the way around and no burrs and it'll seal fine.

Single flairs? I was taught to stay away from single flairs in brake systems.

There's probably reasons for it. But again, I've never had a problem. I've fixed lines on my ranger nearly 2 years ago now, no issues.

Now, I don't really know if Iv'e been accidentally doing double flares (I highly doubt it), but I do not recall ever having that inner lip on the pictures like those posted. I'm pretty sure I'm using the same tool by the descriptions, but I just clamp it in, screw it down to flare it, and make sure it's even all the way around.
