I say fancy silicone... it's probably regular stuff, but the 3-in-1 oil is like WD40 in its use. I got some spray silicone for the garage door and figured it'd be great for the squeaky 30 year old truck doors. Nope. It improved a little for a day, but that's it. The 3-in-1 oil eliminates squeak and smooths out the door for a few months. Does the silicone stuff not work its way inside the hinge and roller like the less viscous 3-in-1?

Id use white lithium spray grease.

I used to use it on the tension pulley on my 460. Itd shut it up for a few months

You're probably close to needing new hinge bushings. There are some dry lubes available that may work well. They spray on and the volatile liquid component carries a dry lubricant (such as graphite or teflon) into the places you need it. Then the liquid quickly evaporates. The dry lubes will not attract and hold dirt the way oils and greases do. Otherwise, I second the motion for white lithium grease.

I'm planning on new hinges altogether. The occasional oiling is just so I don't wake the neighbors in the meantime . I was just surprised how ineffective the silicone was.

Silicone lubricant isn't good on metal on metal contact in general so there's one of the issues... what they said above for the rest :)

your door only squeeks when you open it? must be nice. braggard.

Mine squeak when opening and shutting, then they rattle all the rest if the time.

Mine are silent.

1st gen build quality FTW

Yours are just rusted shut so you have to climb in and out through the window.
My windows messed up. Its been off track for 2 years...but it wobbles less when its partially down so i left it :ROFLMAO:

I use spray white litium grease and never had a squeak issue. I hit the hinges and the roller with the stuff every spring and fall. If you have the rear suicide door, use some generic or wheel bearing grease on the metal bar that works as part of the retention mechanism as well.
