okay on my 1991 xlt ranger when i push the button and it locks in four wheel drive it doesnt want to turn when its engaged. it like pushes and only turns half way and its stiff, what could be the problem?

thanks

This is pretty normal.

The effect is amplified when driving on high traction surfaces. Refrain from using 4x4 on dry pavement.

It's possibly you have a siezed up u-joint causing excessive bind, but I doubt it. Check to be sure.

what he said, 4x4 and pavement is bad, which is what it sounds like you are doing.

I didn't see where he said he was doing it on pavement, but yes, that is not good for the system.

If it goes straight OK, but then binds and starts yanking at the steering wheel (and/or makes a bunch of nasty noises too), then I would agree, the u-joints on the front axle shafts are probably frozen and need to be replaced.
