This diagram is from the 2007 Ranger Workshop Manual, section Engine -- 3.0L (2V) -- Assembly:

44. Position the starter splash shield and install the bolt and the nut. - Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

I can see the benefit of preventing oil pouring onto the starter during oil filter change, but I couldn't find its part number.

On my truck, the starter IS the splash shield.

:(

Maybe you can adapt something from a Nissan frontier. My 01 Nissan had a drain guard on it so oil wouldn't drain down onto the starter when changing the oil

found this in a different forum.

You should do a dry sump system with a remote mount oil filter, to keep from getting oil on the starter....

Remote mounted oil filter solves the problem.

I know this is a old thread but I noticed my funnel under the oil filter has fallen off. Does anybody know the part number for the bolts that hold it on. I have one that is missing thanks.

which bolt? one is a bolt, the other is a stud.
one of them can be either an 8mm or a 10mm.

I never had much luck keeping the starter clean during oil changes, on both the Ranger and a Taurus.

Looks like its the stud that's missing. Its the one closest to the starter would you happen to know what I need for that? Thanks

I believe they are the same thread as the exhaust manifold studs. Those are M10x1.5. I bought Fel-Pro kit ES75106 for the exhaust manifold studs, but it's like $30-40 at O-Reillys. If you go in the store there's a section with various exhaust hardware that has the same size cheaper. There's also Dorman part # 03133 studs that I think are the same size for $15. I went with the Fel-Pro because they looked better (coated).

If anyone knows where to buy that splash shield let me know, I broke mine swapping engines on my Mazda B3000 3.0 and I can't find part # F87Z-11161-AA anywhere except one online place and the picture looks nothing like that oil shield, and another place doesn't show the picture so I'm thinking it's the same part as the place with the different picture.

This is from the official Ford catalog, only installed from '04 to '08. My model year doesn't have it.

splash shield
Part #: 11161
Usage: 08/04/2003 - 08/18/2008, Ranger (2004/), 3.0 V6 12V OHV EFI
Section: Oil Cooler and Filter
Thanks for the link. My Mazda is a 2001 and it had it, so I'd be surprised if 2001 Ranger didn't have it. I wanted to replace mine because when I did the engine swap my starter looked like it was sprayed with bed liner. It was completely coated in oil and black grime. But now that I'm thinking about it, that splash shield must not have done too much with my starter looking like that.
