Hello everyone I am rebuilding a 86 ranger with a 2.3 carb engine bolted to a mazda m5r1 5sp gear box. Last time (5yrs ago) it was on the road it was running a 2brl aision carb and during the first winter I was having a problem with the carb freezing up. If anyone is unfamiliar with this issue the power drops to nothing if it is shut down for 20min its fine again for alittle while. I corrected the issue by installing a new heat pipe from exhaust manifold to air cleaner. I have since rebuilt the engine and tossed the aisan carb as its loaded with emission and was not a very good carb. I do not need to etest as it is below the ten year rule. I have ordered a weber 32/36 progressive carb kit tonight for it but wondering if I will have freeze up issues due to the kit using a open air style breather. I might have to build a air cleaner surround to accommodate a couple heat riser hoses. I am just wondering if anyone is running ranger or mazda on the lima engines in cold climates using the weber carb.

I don't have one of those, but can attest to icing happening. It just takes the right conditions of temperature and humidity. You can most likely get by without the stove/heater & plumbing, but might want to consider some sort of baffle or box around the carb in winter months. Just keeping the air closer to still, the engine can put out some heat and alleviate the icing. In the worst cases, cardboard in front of the radiator will block the air flow enough to get by. If you can find one, you might cobble together a setup that will use exhaust heat from parts at a u-pick-it lot. Back when, carbs were set to run richer to handle different air temps as the airflow was not heated nor cooled. Because of emissions regulations, the makers decided to concentrate on making the carbs work best at a fixed temperature. Thus the heaters & stoves & flaps & plumbing.
I guess you'll find out.

Thanks for the reply. I am a licensed auto and truck tech so fabrication is not a issue. I imagine I will have to fab something up for the winter months but I guess I will find out soon enough.
