disciplerocks's B2 build thread

Not bad Dustin. I got something to throw in your mind if you ever have tranny problems...might want to think about doing a little math and research on your tranny's overdrive ratio (I think .86 or .73, not sure) and figure out how much less gear you will need to run in your axles (from 4.56 to 4.10 or 3.73) and do something similar to Jon and swap a 435 or similar trans with a granny low. This will still net you close to the same highway speed and rpm, but give you a much better crawl ratio...Food for thought :D

I have thought about that, but I already decided what I am going to do. I am still looking for a TK5 cause its shorter and as strong as an M5OD. If I find one and flip my leafs, then I can add another crawl box and keep my rear driveshaft the same length. I already traced my adapter plate on another piece of aluminum, and have 2 1350s and a 1354 still in the garage.

Then I'd be looking at 275.4:1

And yes I'm afraid my tranny is going out. Its had a shudder sound on startup ever since the flop. And its getting progressively worse.

I have to say my TK4 has taken alot abuse from me. I cram/force it into low gears to come to stops and make the rear tires bark, I shift without the clutch, etc...and it holds up nice for that (but I should stop until I get my 5.0 stuff done).

As far as the TK being as strong as an M5OD, Im not sure on that one, the tech library says other wise.

I've never seen anyone really bash them like the FM's. Plus I found this a while back.

The TK4 has a pretty wimpy reverse. The tk5 is better. I beat the crap out of a TK5 behind a 3.0 in my offroad truck. It has never given me a problem.
I rebuild manual trannies. The TK5 is quite comparable inside to the Mazda. I've rebuilt 4 Mazdas to every one TK5. The number of TK5s that I've rebuilt is uncountable.
I use 1 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer and fill the trans with 10w30 synthetic motor oil.

And if you look at the PDF in the tech library you'll see most of the internal part numbers are the same.

I liked the gear ratios in the tk5 better than the M5od. At least with the 2.3l

Is yours from a 2.3? That won't work for a 4.0.

I didnt know that you could hook up a 3.0 to any TK due to they have a bellhousing pattern that is different from the 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 which all share the same pattern and any 3.0 tranny that has been made doesnt have a bellhousing that comes off its tranny either (and the 3.0 a unique pattern of its own from all the rest).

As fort the 2.3 TK5, it can work on a 4.0. Just get a 2.8 bellhousing for her and your good to go. I dont know if an FM tranny bellhousing has the same 4 bolt pattern as the TK to hook to the tranny but if so then that should work too. I do know that some 2.8 and 2.9 were hooked to the FM from the factory.

The TK5 originally came from the 84 b2 2.8 I picked up a 2.3 bellhousing for it. So, it has both bellhousings.

Sold my old D35 today.

Also made it to the u-pull and found that an Explorer sport rear shaft is the right length I need for the front. No cutting!

Only noticed one, but it didn't have a tcase.

Question for you

What brake master cylinder are you running and what did you need to do to make it work? Also, do you have pictures?

F250. It has the same fittings as a B2. I think Rangers are different.

Do you have a picture so I can compare? Thanks
