Yes i have a 2001 ranger wth 8.8 in it an there seems to be leaking just behind the yolk on the rear driveshaft...does anyone know of a link to a article where i could fix this myself as i prefer to do my own maintenence an am learning more about the rangers all the time...this is my 3rd one.thanks for any imput guys..

Its called a pinion seal.

I did one on an early 8.8 rear in an F150, but its been so long i dont remember the details.

I do remember theres a big nut that holds the yoke on, and it was a pretty easy job.

Ok..thanks im gona fix it soon...its also got a significant humming noise also..im sure its worn out

Better be checking the oil level in your axle then. I'd stop driving it until then.. It may be knackered already.

Replacing the pinion seal is an easy job. Just time consuming when doing it on the ground by yourself. Just be sure to put the parts back in, in the order you took them out. I made a pinion seal driver using a piece of pipe the same size as the outer diameter of the seal, and welding a piece of flat stock across one end of it to hammer on..

Ok.thanks . Yes it is my daily driver and I plan on doing it by the next weekend or so

If it's making a humming noise, then almost guaranteed you have a bearing or gear in there that's already gone south (more often than not this happens because of low fluid level). These days it's generally easier & cheaper to get a whole new rear axle from a wrecking yard than it is to rebuild one. Any year axle from '93-'09 should fit yours. Just make sure you get one of the same gear ratio if yours is 4x4 since both the front & rear ratios have to match... If you have a 2WD, then you'll have more flexibility if you decide you want to change it.
