I have a '91 2.9 Ranger. It needs a new temp sensor. I have a brand new sensor for a '89 2.3. I checked Rockauto and it list both as separate p/n's. any idea what could be different? Using the 2.3 sensor would save me a trip today.

Thanks!

I would assume the plug is the difference. Why don't you compare?

I would assume that the different P/N's are because the sensor is a different value (varistor) check the value of both AT the SAME temperature, if WAY different, then you know.

A difference of up to 1000 ohms would be acceptable, BUT, say 10,000 way to much.

Did you reset the computer disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hour so the computer can set the new values. You must do that whenever cleaning or changing a sensor. It may take a couple complete warm up cycles for the computer to set the values.
