detroit or powertrax

is it better to have one front or rear if you can only do 1 for the time being?

I'm sorry but what is the difference between the Lock-Right and the No-Slip made by Richmond? They both look similar, I've had the No-Slip (8.8 gear) in mine for 35,000 miles and have never regreted getting it. Got my latest one from Rocky Mountain 4x4 for around $400.

The No-Slip is supposed to have smoother engagement (less clunking and chatter). Both are just as effective for traction though.

Rear.

Jmhm17 if your running lockers f/r or even a l/s ( limited slip ) in the rear end and a locker in the front unless your doing some serious off roading or rock crawling you are going to have more than enough traction to do what ever you want to get into.. with that said i think that you will be suprised at where you rig will take you without a lift.

hmm so a ls might be all i need and maybe a locker in the front.. i just dont want the locker to lock on me on an off ramp or somthing.. but i also dont want to replace the clutches in my l/s if i get stuck.. i mean everyone says what you say, they say full lockers are way more than what i need but why is it im getting stuck in 2 feet of snow? will tires really help me that much? if i get a set of bfg mud's or procomp muds then i shouldent need lockers for the little off roading i do? i dont know maybe im overdoing it.

so hows this sound then.. a ford ls in the rear and a aussie locker in the front? or should i just save my money? i just hate the fact i have an open rear i feel like thats 100% of the reason why i get stuck.. and yes i take my time off roading.. nothing works i always spin, then sink.. then im done..

**i think this thread should be stickied or somthing cause theres alot of good info in here..

What do you have for tires? If you do alot of winter driving mud tires won't be the answer, yeah they are great it loose fluffy stuff and would take care of your 2' drifts, but might as well be slicks on hard packed snow or ice. A decent A/T would be the best option, BFG is supposed to make one of the best, although I really can't complain too much about the Widetrack Baja AT's on my F-150.

Locking on an off ramp, what? If you get stuck because you're spinning one tire, a LS wont help, it will still spin one tire, been there done that, not worth the time/money.

i have all seasons right now, i am going to get bfg mud's in a few weeks, i was holding out on the A/T's cause i figured the muds were more worth it since the tread is alot more aggresive..

and about locking on an off ramp i mean if i gas it around a turn or on an off ramp my rearend is going to lock with even power and cause me to spin out, thats what im talking about. i mean i dont know how easy or hard it is to engage an auto locker but im just trying to be on the safe side. and as far as an l/s only spinning one tire when the other is locked in the snow, mud, dirt, whatever.. i thought it still spun both just one spun more than the other and eventualy it would stop spinning if the tire was way to lodged into the ground, a locker i thought gave no remorse it just spun no mater what, even if it broke your axles trying to get out..

so regardles locked or not snow is always gona be a bitch.. im confused now.. i dont know what setup i should look into getting.. i dont wheel that much.. should i just get an l/s, or get front and rear lockers? or just get rear locker, or just lock the front < useless.. i think..

Another thing I just noticed, if you think you are going to go thru a constant 2' of snow with a Ranger at stock height forget it. You should be able to take a drift, but you don't have the clearance to deal with it consistantly. Snow will pack under your truck and pick your wheels off the ground, and what doesn't do that will pile up infront of your truck until you can't push it. The biggest, baddest mud tires or lockers will not save you at that point.

Loose the All Seasons for some All Terrains and get back to us, I bet that and a couple tubes of sand will significantly reduce your problems. Unless you are hitting mud don't bother with MT's, like I said before in other wintery conditions they can hurt more than help.

so what about in the summer time.. will A/T's cake up if i do come across a pit?

maybe the 2' was an overstatment.. 2' drifts.. and a little over a foot of snow is the most i have driven through..

I agree here, Just get some good All Terrain tires and weigh down your bed a little, this will help a lot in the snow. They won't be as good in a pit as some MT's, but they will mosty likeley be cheaper and last longer, if this is a pavement pounder, I'd get AT's

If you do not do much off roading, a locker may be a little too much, the cheapest being around 200-300 for a lunchbox I think you are better off just saving your money and spending it on things with boobs.

You really need to ask yourself how much 'real' off roading are you gonna do and decide if you really want to spend money on Lockers or Limited Slips, I have done some amazing things with open diffs and I'm sure others can say the same thing.

Is it worth it?

I get where I am going with them. But I don't really wheel my F-150 much other than deer hunting in the winter. They do make a fool out of the all seasons that where on it before, one pulling a trailer I had to use 4x4 to get out of a flat, dry, grass parking lot. General Ameritrac 550's were a joke and will never grace a vehicle of mine again, they looked like a friggin ag implement tire and gripped about like I would expect one to as well.

My Ranger went from car tires to mud tires, that was quite a difference to behold in just about every aspect as well. When things get dicey out this truck sits... not so much the going but the stopping is where I get nervous.

If you do alot of mudding you might find a cheap set of rims and a used set of BFG ATs and have a summer set and a winter set. Mud is mainly just for fun, snow is a safety deal, I would rather get stuck in a mud hole once in awhile than take out a tree when I hit a area of packed snow. They do make some pretty agressive AT's, and some MT's that are supposed pretty good on ice/packed snow, but I have just listed just the ones I have experiance with.

:) thanx for the replys guys.. im leaning more tords the A/T's now, i think im getting ahead of my selfe hear, theres no real place for me to go wheeling where i live but the everyonce an a while i do i just dont want to get stuck.. so far is 2-0 and the trails seem to win every time with me.. ill get a set of tires and let yall know how it goes..

lol as far as a lift goes.. damn im even wondering if i should get one.. i still like the way the truck would look with a superlift :)

Once again, do you need it?
Is it worth it?

It really all depends what your truck is going to be used for. A lift is neededd to clear larger tires so when you hit big rocks or ruts, the damage your undercarriage takes is less, but that all depends on how much off roading you do:icon_thumby:

But if it going to be mall rated, like 4x4Junkie:icon_thumby: A lift would make your truck look better, but then you'll need bigger tires.

damn i wish there where trails where i lived.. then i would need at this fancy shit..

You won't spin out in the snow with a locker as long as you're easy on the throttle, sometimes it better to kick the ass end out anyways if the front wants to plow.

I would go with a lock right locker and some good tires. BFG A/T's or Interco TRXUS M/T's, they have some serious siping. I hit the snow every weekend and the interco's work great on the iced-over roads and in the deep stuff.
