detroit or powertrax

your front d35 is similar but not identical to the d35 in your pic.

The Dana 35 gets a lot of its glory because it also comes in the back of Jeeps as a solid axle, like the one shown in the picture. Being that your truck is newer than 1998 it has a more traditional styled independant front suspension rather than the TTB Dana 35 like older trucks. Dana is just a company that makes axles/differentials for just about all the major vehicle manufacturers.

Trucks usually have a stronger rear axle than front, because for the most part it gets more usage more. Some vehicles do have the same (4.2 or 4.6 F-150's have 8.8's for both axles for example, although the front is independant)

Yes, it should. Are the splines the same still on the IFS? 27 I beleive?

oh i thought they would still be 28.. ugh.. so at 450 a locker this is going to get exspensive.. goddamn open dif.. i get stuck everyware.. my buddy told me to go down some dirt road covered in snow said his saab made it down there with blizzaks i got stuck half way down the road we walked back came back in his saab and dug me out.. every time i go wheelin i get stuck, i need a locker i dont think tires are going to help me much with an open diff. you think just a rear locker will help me enough? i almost bought a ford traction loc lsd.. but after doing some research on lockers it seems like all LSD's are good for is the street..

**edit: yup, summit i can get front and rear lockers for 938 + shipping.. woot.. so new tires or lockers? i got all seasons.. what do you guys think?

oh yeah i need confermation on the d35.. 27 spline right?

and this will be streetable for a DD?

all my plans are is to get a 3" superlift and 33's and a superlift front driveshaft.. im sure there is cheaper way to lift the truck but like i said im a newb so if you guys could shed some light on that subject too that would be great (fyi, my tbars are already cranked.)

so any d35 powertrax no slip will work in the front?
No I dont think so, some jeep carriers have different side gears or something like that, get one that it for a ford d35 IFS front.

NO.
The only company that makes a locker for the IFS Dana 35 is Aussie, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

IIRC arn't 97 and earlier D35 in the Ranger's a reverse cut gear?

Damn' you beat me to it.

That's what I'm runnin and it has been a good investment.
It ratchets sometimes around corners but, when the pavement ends it really is bad ass!
I only locked the front of mine because i have lsd out back but let me tell you the difference is like night and day- now if only i could get it to flex.

You might try there for pricing too, I hear Jim is pretty competitive.

For just going thru snow even a limited slip would help in the front, and tires make a big difference. A 2004 will have a live front axle so you can't unlock a hub to get through tight places, even if it is in 2wd so will run the risk of binding/breaking stuff if it locks up on dry pavement and can also mess with your steering ability. Good tires will make a big difference if you don't have them, I have had my Ranger up to the bumper in drifts without a problem, and I have two open axles with mud tires. I have found two sandbags in the bed also really help get traction in snow.

I would vote for a limited slip in the front if anything, with a limited slip or locker in the rear, a Detroit Truetrack may be finding its way into my F-150 just to reduce the number of one wheel peels in the winter as I try to get moving in traffic.

ok so how do i get an LSD up front then? i got a tight parking spot so im going to need to turn my wheel all the way everyday, and im not going to be bogging every day so maybe a lsd will be all i need. but i kinda wana spend the extra money on a locker in the rear.. where do i get and LSD for the front?

do i even need to have a locker or lsd in the front for the everyonce and a while i go wheelin? or will a locker in the rear be all i need?
