Deep Fried Turkey!

anybody done this? i have heard its really good and would like to try it this year. i found a fryer kit on sale for $30 and another 4.5 gals of oil for $20the fryer comes with the burner, kettle and basket, thermometer and hanger for the basket. it better be damn good to fork out $50 just to roast a damn bird!

Yeah we have a deep fryer at work we use for our thanksgiving, christmas, and other event turkeys. It is very good. The key is the temp, my boss desginates someone to watch it the whole time it is frying. They have to constantly monitor the oil temp.

What is the heat source? Ours is an outdoor propane powered fryer, and the temp can be kinda finicky. Make sure and shield it from the wind, that way you don't get changing readings. Good luck!
 
We do it all the time. It always comes out awesome! I actually prefer it over anything from the oven. Besides, it's kinda hard to bring the oven wheeling when ya go where we go! :D

I like deep fried turkey myself and you don't have to use peanut oil just as long as you keep an eye on the temperature. Peanut oil just has a higher burning point then other oil is all and stays cleaner longer.

I've deep fried for the last three Thanksgivings and the first two years used peanut oil exclusively. Last year I used canola and it turned out just the same as peanut but costed a lot less.

Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside is what it's going to turn out like. Try deep frying a whole chicken afterwards.....IT'S THE BEST CHICKEN I'VE EVER EATED!!!!!

It's great on whole fish too like Talapia! Just season the entire fish then run a wire coat hanger through the mouth. AWESOME!!! Enjoy buddy!

great pics, mike. looks like i will try it this year. the cooker i was looking at was a propane burner, and the oil was peanut oil. not sure if i will use peanut oil or not, will still do some shopping around.
 
You won't regret it. We used to do it at work. We had one guy that loved to cook and we'd do fish frys and chicken all the time. One time he got one of those injection things and injected some lemon pepper dressing with a little tobasco. Best chicken ever!
 
Be careful when yo put the turkey in the pot. Hot oil and too much water can cause a fire. Many fires are started every year because someone isn't careful when putting the bird in the pot.

Best tasting bird I've ever tasted has been deep fried.
Last year, some country singer (I forget who) deep fried 130 birds at a Nashville homeless shelter. Imagine that task.
 
how long does it normally take? (ive got a 20lb turkey) and you save the oil to reuse, right? how much oil do you need?
 
My rule of thumb is generally 3.5 minutes per pound. Get some cheese cloth to use as a strainer as you can reuse the oil 3 - 4 times. (depending on how clean it is). And as previously mentioned. Be careful when putting the turkey in as too much water can cause a fire. We use welders mits to avoid any grease burns on the forearms! :D
 
We've done it the past 2 years. The first year we burnt the hell out of it. We still ate it. The second year it turned out perfect and damn was it good.

Ditto on getting it into the oil. It will pop and whatnot like crazy and you will usually always end up getting oil all over about a 3' radious of your cooker. We have a nice dead spot in the back lawn from it.

Good times though, and even better eatin'

I believe the reason for peanut oil is 1) it's healthier than most oils, and 2) mainly because it has a higher flash point.
