so i have the option of getting a rear dana 60 or a 14 bolt for my sas. im not sure which one i want. im just assuming that they are both the same width and the same bolt pattern.

which would you chose?

is the 14 bolt a full-floater, gm had to versions, the difference is the 14b full-floater has bolts in the center of the rim holding the axle in.

to tell you the truth, i looked at it and i dont remember seeing any bolts in the middle

if its not a ff go with the 60

alright cool. im not sure what year it is or even what vehical it was from.. the guy just showed it to me when i went to pick up my iroks.

my original plan was to get a front dana44 and a rear dana 60 from a 79 f250.

I thought all 14 bolts were full floats, but not all 60's were full floaters?

Not all 14 bolt axles were full floating axles. There was a semi-floating version as well, but it was significantly different than it's FF 'cousin'. The SF axle had a 9.5" ring gear, conventional pinion installation (no removable pinion housing like the FF version has), and obviously semi-floating axle shafts. This axle was available in 5x6.5" lug patterns (found on the 454SS), 6x6.5" found on Heavy half tons/2500LD. In later years, there were also some with the 8x6.5" lug pattern as well.

I chose the 14ff for my build because it was free, and it is stout enough to withstand almost anything you can through at it on 38's with stock components.

When I bought my front 60, it came as a matched set. The rear FF60 is still sitting on the shop floor unused. If you want it, it's yours for $200.

14 bolts are strong as hell, but under the weight (or lack of) of a ranger I'd strongly consider using a D60 rear as well, because it's a pretty stout axle itself and gains you close to 3 inches more ground clearance.

The semi floater 14 bolt has an oval shaped cover. The FF14 bolt has a "diamond" shaped cover similar to a dana. The ff14 has three pinion bearings like a Ford 9". It is an upgrade from a D60. I've seen D60 rear end fail quite easily. The D80 rear end is a closer comparison.

There's also a D61 which was modified to run ratios down to 3.00 and up to 4.56 which you can't find on a Dana 60 rear--which came with 3.33 to 4.56. Also, there was a dually D61 for van and chassis-cabs. Otherwise, both came with full/semi and Trac-Lok so you would need to look up the BOM on Dana's website to be sure of what axle it is you are looking at.
