so the wrecking yard i got my axle from said the gearing was 3.73 like i wanted but i counted the teeth an the ring gear teeth theres 50 an the pinion theres 16 can anyone tell me what ratio that is ? i used the calculator on here an it sure doesnt say 3.73 that means im gonna chew some ass

You might try counting it again. There's no such gears for the D35 that have those tooth counts.

3.73 should be a 41T ring, 11T pinion

Others are:

3.27 = 36T / 11T
3.55 = 39T / 11T
4.10 = 41T / 10T
4.56 = 41T / 9T
4.88 = 39T / 8T
5.13 = 41T / 8T

ok i went out an counted it like a billion more times an every time its 49/16 is there some special way to count how many teeth are on a ring lol

How about looking for the tooth count #s stamped into the edge of the ring gear? (should be "41 11", etc.).

Failing that, maybe try putting a mark on one tooth with some paint or a grease pencil so you have a clear mark to start counting from.

I dunno, I s'pose it could be possible they are some weird oddball ratio (maybe custom cut gears), but that seems EXTREMELY unlikely on a little pickup truck front axle like the D35.

(49 - 16 comes out to a 3.06 ratio, which I've never seen (and would serve no practical use anyway, as 3.08 is less than 1% away)

yea i checked the numbers on the side an sure enough it says 49, 15 !! so i miss counted the pinion cause its down in there i cant see it lol but it says 49,15 on the side i called the yard an they said they didnt have any 3.73's so they just gave me some random one i guess. so how come 36/11 gears and 49/15 both come out to be 3.27 ratio

Hmmm... That's a lot of teeth lol. I guess I figured in the wrong direction (I've yet to physically lay hands on a 3.27 chunk, sorry 'bout that) Of course had you originally said 49-15, it might've clicked when the calculation revealed 3.2666666666666 :icon_twisted:

Yeah, they gave you a 3.27.

What size tires you going to run? You'd probably want something deeper than 3.73 anyway.

just 33, 13.5s. ltbs. one day 35's but im just tryin to get 3.73s cause i didnt want to regear the front and rear right now i need the truck rolling again soon and can u joints be bad if theres no play in them? i just am looking at all these stock ujoints on the dana 35 an dunno to replace them or not there not sloppy or anything

IMHO if it is not what you want I'd take it back. Even if you install it and don't like it you may be stuck with it as the yard may not take it back.

It could be possible for them to be frozen with rust, yes. One way to check is to have the steering knuckle turned at an angle, then rotate the shaft by hand. If the joint is bound up at all, you'll feel resistance (or it may not even turn at all).

Normally on a new-used frontend, I like to replace everything if it looks original. There are stronger u-joints you can put in at the same time as well, if desired.

You'll probably want 4.88 gears if you're looking to spin 33s with your 2.8L.

yea im gonna regear when i do the 8.8 swap, an i havnt put the front end together what ill check out the ujoints though. i have to buy hubs still , i got my right gears atleast now though they are 41,11 i had to pull them my self an i just swapped them the wrong ones an i got a free pass side axle stub lol cuase i didnt take the c clip out they said jus go lol

If I went into a junkyard to buy a 3.73 D35 chunk and they simply gave
me a random one KNOWING that they didn't have a 3.73 You'd best
expect that the guy's gonna get a quick lesson in a game I call
"Medicine ball" and when I play it medicine is what you are gonna need...

After the surgery to wire your ribs back together.... should you survive
that long.

To say I'd be royally pissed would be a gross overestimation
of the rage output potential of modern royalty.

yea no kidding, im just getting ready to take my driveshaft in to get it shortened i think it needs to be an inch shorter, no one has an exact measurement on that?
