dana 28 in my 90 ranger?

i thought they switched to the dana 35 in 89 but my 90 xlt with a 2.9 has what looks like a 28 in it.
 
Nope, it was a mid-year 1990 change. Early '90 models (those with a MFG date before 11-'89) were fitted with the D28.

Fortunately the D35 is a bolt-in swap aside from having to shorten the driveshaft an inch (which you can forgo that if the truck has a suspension lift that is 4" or greater).
 
Would it not be a bolt in affair if you also get the driveshaft from the D35?
 
Only if you got the matching transfercase from the vehicle that had the d35.
