daily doubler build

I unbolted the tranny, removed the crossmember and got it ready to pull. Then I took a bottle jack and jacked between the tranny and the floor of the truck, pivoting it on the Y pipe and forcing the top of the bell housing to "make room" for itself in the tranny tunnel. Mine just made a gouge in the sheet metal. I also used another jack to push up on the front of the engine to tilt it backwards although I dont know how much that helped with removal, I think it helped with access to some of the bolts with my impact wrench and extensions.

welp I got my driveshafts out and doubler off, then I thought I'd tackle the exhaust. I had the bolts soaking since I entered the shop, so probably just over an hour. go to torque on the first one and the head pops right off the bolt. I decided to soak em again and let it sit over night. I'll head to the shop at the same time tomorrow, heat the flanges, and go at it again. if that doesn't work I dunno what I'm gonna do.

Damn! Rust sucks, eh?:pissedoff:

A couple things I have discovered to be extremely useful in your situation:

- Swearing. Unheard of before combinations are a plus.
- Tool throwing. The more expensive and precious the tool the better. It also helps if you throw it in the general direction of a window or your garage plasma TV. It also counts if you drop the tools in the oil pan.
- Dog kicking. Your neighbour's annoying yap-machine ... go and kick it in the arse. Kick the neighbour too, while you're at it. And screw his wife.

And that's about it for good solutions.;missingteeth;

If the bolts are rusted enough, there's nothing you can do. Snap 'em, remove the manifold (hopefully the bolts holding the manifold won't snap! LOL), redrill and re-tap. It's a PITA. I had to do it on one of my bolts, and it took quite some time. But there isn't much of an alternative ... unless you have a body lift, you may be able to wiggle the transmission through without removing the exhaust. Without a body lift, I don't see how it could be done.

yeah they're rusted pretty bad, I hope the soaking will magically rethread the bolts lol

done. done. and done.

on a serious note I try not to get too frustrated. shit happens and I've found the only way to fix the problem/prevent it from happening again is to keep my head on straight. even if I break all the bolts at least that means I can still get the tranny out and new clutch in, then I can go tearin around town with open headers ;missingteeth;

Yeah the last time i got pissed off realy bad, I went to throw my tape measure into the bed of my truck, missed completely, and proceded to own my pass side mirror.

The only thing it does on occasion is make you a little stronger. Every other time, it just makes stuff worse.

Try dropping your clean beautiful 1/2 drive torque wrench. And a ratchet. And bits. And hammer. And wrenches. There were more tools than oil in the pan. Not including me.

I had some success gettin the bolts outta the exhaust flange. heated em up to the temp of the sun and they came out. now I gotta get the tranny off. I've got the special tool for the hydro line, any helpful tips to get this baby off?

I didn't have the tool ... took an hour and eventually breaking it apart on the old Explorer, and 10 seconds on the Ranger at the scrapyard.

Just push the white ring inside with a flat tool. I used a big screwdriver or a little prybar (just for the flat! not used as a prybar!). Push it all around so that you can't see it anymore, and the whole connector should come out.

alright we'll see how it goes. updates to come. thanks

the special tool that comes with the clutch kit is GARBAGE. I bent the piss out of that little thing trying to get the plastic sleeve in. I looked at my new slave so I see what needs to be done to get the line out but I still couldn't get that sleeve down there. how hard was it to move it? I was pressin pretty dang hard with a flat screwdriver and it wasn't budgin, maybe cause I wan't pushing on the line like metalmac said. I guess I'll give her another go tomorrow

Sounds like there's dirt or corrosion in there maybe. The one on my BII pushed in without too much effort using a flat blade screwdriver.

When it works, it's rather effortless. As I mentioned, it took me under a minute to disconnect it from the Ranger at the scrapyard (limited tools and not ideal conditions!)

The one that didn't work was exactly like you describe. Transmission out of the truck (so perfect accessibility), 2 people on it ... after an hour we ended up busting the female connector apart with a hammer and chisel.
If you're going to change the slave, it will be ok to trash the old one. Just don't damage the male connector on the clutch line.
