Wow, I totally missed this thread. Lots of progress Bray. Good work, keep it rolling.

Thanks! I have to pay my 500 dollar deductable due to my little accident and my insurance premium is due the 31st of this month. Money is getting tight but I'm going to try and at least finish building the axle. Then I can worry about affording the swap parts.

Very nice job on the gears. Looking forward to seeing you get the D44 under the Ranger.

Dang that spreader looks almost strangely familiar lol.
Agreed, gears look great. :icon_thumby:

ok, it may be a newb question but whats the case spreader for?

Releases the carrier bearing preload (makes R&R'ing the diff from the housing much easier).

I may have stolen the design from someone, can't remember who though :D.

Thanks for the compliments guys. All in all its coming together pretty well. I took yesterday and this morning to clock my doubler, just one hole. Two may be possible if you did some grinding and rewelding, but I'm not in the mood to tackle alum. welding so one hole it is. After measuring I gained right around 1.5" at the front output. I should be able to toss a crossmember under there, flush with the bottom of the frame now, may take some exhaust work though.

I've read where guys have been having trouble with the plastic guides on the shift fork. Thought I'd take a pic of mine while I had it apart.

200 miles away from being 11k on the doubler. Guides are good, and fluid is red as can be. I bought replacement guides in case mine had worn like the others, so I went ahead and swapped em out just for good measure. The old ones looked fine though.

Now I'm just waiting for my shafts and other stuff to come in. The hubs made it today though.

360* rotation to lock these suckers.

I love the guy in the brown truck :D

I've gotta buy books today and school starts back up tomorrow. Hopefully I can get back to work on the axle this weekend.

Welp I got it assembled today. I went ahead and welded the diff to the tubes just for reassurance then painted it all up.

I'm not using the stock diff cover, so I didn't paint it or include it in the pics. I did however re-install it to keep all the nasties out of my diff.

After installing the shafts, I noticed that they didn't rest against the axle tube when pushed all the way in (at the inner C). The long side shaft had a larger gap than the short side shaft too, long side had ~1/8" gap and short side had ~1/16" gap. I went ahead and installed the spindles and measured the length of spline sticking out of the end of the spindle. They differed by ~1/32" (long side shaft being longer). I figured that was acceptable since that's the accuracy of the tape measure and that's what I used to narrow the axle.

I slid the hubs on, installed nuts/washers/locknuts, and went to install the lockouts. On both sides I had to pull the axle out a little to get the snap ring on the end of the shaft, leaving a larger gap between the shaft and the axle tube. Since the short shaft is stock length, I figured the gaps were normal. Kinda sucks as that will allow crap to get into the axle tubes (and why I had to scrape the crap out of the axle tubes when I was cleaning this axle up). The joints don't bind when sitting on the steering stops so it's all good :D

Looking sharp Bray......

I know about school books....EXPENSIVE.

Damn keep up the good work!

I like the "accent" color painted hub assemblies, I think I've seen that somewhere before. :thefinger:

I must admit, it looks clean. The cover, steering, and RA's will be red as well :thefinger:. I thought I'd carry my red/black theme throughout the truck, I color matched the interior a long time ago. I don't know wtf that guy was thinking going with yellow :thefinger: :thefinger: :thefinger:

Tell me about it. I bought 2 books the other day - $350...and one was used.

Thanks Brad I plan to :D

Evan - After all the work/time/money I've dropped into this thing, I'm looking forward to flogging the piss out of it. Well, to a certain extent, it is still my DD.
