So I'm trying to get rid of my ranger but have yet to complete my D35 swap (Just needs put in). More or less the guy I'm selling it to wants the keep the D28 in it and just regear that to match the 4.88's in my 8.8 and ditch the axle swap idea. Here's my dilemma; I can't locate a set of reverse cut 4.88's for a 28. Highest I have been seeing is 4.56. Anyone know where I can find a set?

As far as I know 4.56 is as low as you can get for the D28.

pretty sure they dont make them. And for good reason. You will DESTROY any d 28 with 4.56 gears, let a one 4.88. Not to mention the pinion head on a d 28 for 4.88 gears would be the size of a grape.

For a while some places had had a 5.13 listed (I don't know why).

I don't think they have 4.88's for the D35 either, they went straight to 5.13 as well.

haha interesting, I have two sets of them :icon_confused:

I kinda figured they didn't have 4.88's for a d28 so that pretty much answers my question.

Good luck even finding those, I looked for months and couldn't find anything. You may find a used set but the lowest commonly available ratio I've seen is 4.10. I ended up swapping it out for a 1995 D35, installed 4.56 gears with an L/S and never looked back.

well ok then. I couldn't find any listed for a while now. Where'd you get them?

No 4.88 D28 gears available (never have been).

motive gear also makes a reverse cut 4.88 for a D35. I kinda figured they didn't but it's easier to ask sometimes. Ebay is usually loaded with 4.56's for D28's and D35's. I really don't want to swap axles. I'm more or less trying to get rid of the truck to continue my other builds.

wow, wish i'd known that sooner. been riding with 4.56's in my d28 for nearly 2 years now. guess my poor old truck just doesn't know it's front axle is supposed to be destroyed. altzheimer's perhaps?

actually, it's not so much what you drive, but how you drive. my quote below is there for a reason... a constant reminder to myself.

Which is why I'm continuing to build up my powerstroke so it's bullet proof. Put out 569hp and 1247 ft lbs on the dyno and I'm looking for more. Time for headstuds, fuel pumps, injectors, and a built tranny.

even with a 2.8.....33 tires and a d28 are not a great idea.

not true, i had 4.56s in my d28. only broke one axle...ever. and i was not nice to that axle. i actually sold that pig on here awhile back. i dont remember who bought it but if your on here and still have it, let me know how its holding up. im always interested to know how my old parts aare doing. :icon_thumby:

if you dont hate d 28's and have 33 inch aggressive tires....you have not been "wheelin" in a place that required 4x4 and motor at the same time.

thats just the way it is.
