Custom Tire Swing Out or Modify One for a Jeep?

Wasn't/isn't @85_Ranger4x4 designing and building one? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Um... Where does the license plate go?

You have to think outside of the bumper, a really easy fix if you are going to run it full time is on the spare:

It is a slow moving project. This is my original plan:

After playing with my spare I think I might move the spare more towards the center though, it doesn't take much to block a tail light with a spare tire.

This is what I have so far:

My license plate is just screwed to the face of the bumper on the passenger side. I was going to put it in my spare tire but I have a Trasharoo on it and it would be blocked.

What did you do for a light?

That is my current debacle.

I've seen LED license plate bolts... those would work slick. They don't look very long either...

I have seen license plate frames too... just kinda wonder how they hold up hanging off the back of the truck.

I never used them... seems the reviews were good.

I don't have a light on it at the moment. I will probably cut a hole and use the factory light... just haven't done it yet... it's one of those things that's not illegal until you're driving through downtown at 2AM, then it's probable cause to get sent to gulag.

First of all, check out e-trailer and type "spare tire carrier" and you will see some good prices/options. They are less than $40 and can mount to all sorts of bumpers or stake pockets too.

I have a few ideas and words of wisdom about them LED license plate lights. Have you looked into a spare tire carrier for a travel trailer/camper? They mount to a 4" square bumper and are dirt cheap. If you are already making a bumper just make one out of 4" square tubing. As for them LED bolt/lights. yes, they do work but they use REALLY thin wiring and when I put mine on I pulled the wiring out of the solder when I accidentally spun it instead of the nut when positioning the light. So if you get the cheap ones (the ones that replace the license plate bolts) then just be careful when wiring/installing them.

Although I don't know exactly which carrier you are talking about (do you have a link?) aren't most of those fixed position? How do you get the tailgate open with a fixed tire carrier mount to you bumper?

That was my initial idea... but it becomes a major spare tire wrestling PITA to get a drink out of the cooler in the back of the truck.

They do make swing out options but by no means are they cheap. I don't know how much they wobble around back there too, I don't really have dinky little trailer tires to hang on it.

I am using the 4XInovations hinge like Shran used. I just unlatch it, remove one bolt and I can remove the spare tire carrier whenever I want to.

I guess I've only seen the fixed positioned ones. That would probably work... but my spare is to heavy for it's 60lb rating. I also bet that thing rattles like a mofo… and I really don't want to trip over my spare tire while I'm "tailgating".
