Wonder if they adjusted the transmission to keep it from exploding again. Love the bronco 2, not too sure about this stupid transmission, sorry I'd rather have the old 3 speed transmission back, at least I knew it would work properly, at least in my 84 Ranger it did, and it pulled a 14' travel trailer all over the country from 1984 until 1989, and never had an issue, just normal services.

I drove my current truck from 1996-2005 with as a 2wd 2.9/5sp/3.73 gears &235/75-15 tires and it was entirely happy at higher speeds. even on 65mph speed limit roads.

I drove the truck back and forth up and down the length of I-476 more times than I care to count, the 2,9 was entirely happy anywhere from 2600-3500rpm for any length of time
I ever tried it....

150,000 miles with several different 2.9 engines in this specific truck:
Because of the way the early Speed-density engine management works fuel consumption
is more related to throttle position than engine rpm, so my method was get the engine spinning by using WOT for as short a time as necessary, then upshift and use as light a foot as possible.

Also somewhere in there Around 2003-2004 I switched to 4.10 gears and achieved my best mileage ever

In the summer of 2007 I converted to 4x4 and switched to a 4.0.

And my observation of the 4.0 engine is that it sucks gas like it has a bullet hole in the tank above 2600rpm

Highway stability requires good shocks and sway-bars.

For shocks I run Bilsteins

I've also gone full urethane on my suspension bushings.

My ride isn't "user friendly", but the truck is utterly predictable...

They 83 cruising 70 no issue.


My bii is as described above me. Predictable but not user friendly. I run no sway bars and stock f150 shocks with eb axles, a 4.0 5speed, 4.88 gears and 35s. I'm cranking around 3500rpm at 70 getting 10mpg in it

Thanks everyone. So it sounds to me like it will be just fine as it is. I guess I was just used to the 84 B2 with the manual transmission being a bit more snappy on takeoff.
