cryo treat a dana 28 ttb?

The explorer and Ranger use the same axle.

The housing is cast aluminum on the D35.
Just to clearify, the '90 Bronco II 2.9, '91-'94 Explorer 4.0, and the '90-'97 Ranger 4.0 use the same front end; the Dana 35. There are SOME early '90s Rangers that have the 4 cylinder and the 3.0 that has the Dana 35/28 hybrid axle.

The center section of the true Dana 35 weighs about 45 pounds. The center section of a Dana 28 weighs about 2-3 pound lighter. The added strength of the Dana 35 beams would be well worth the weight in a desert truck.

As I stated earlier, the Dana 35 center section is 45 lbs and the D28 center section is 44 lbs (according to the tech library). I'm not sure of the overall weight difference though. The D35 (depending on source) is slightly wider and the shafts and u-joints are bigger, but I believe the strength gained well outweighs any increased weight. Plus as stated, it's sprung weight that increases your stability.

the axles are only .10(tenth) smaller on the 28 which seems like a small sacrifice.i learned a long time ago to not try and re-invent the wheel so i am listening to the forums advice....but,who on here has actually destroyed 28 hubs and or axles?i enjoy thinking outside the box and if i can take d28 parts and exceed d35 strength i consider it advancing the community.as well as reviving parts that where once considered throw-away items.again if you have personal experience breaking your d28 i would love to hear from you.

I wore out all the u-joints in my D28 to the point where failure was going to happen. I also destroyed a hub. I looked into replacing them, but opted to swap in a D35 I picked up for $50. No problems so far.

where they worn from high mileage or abuse?did the wasted axle eat the hub?

You wont take Dana 28 parts and exceed a Dana 35's strength, just wont/cant happen. The Dana 35 is MUCH more upgradeable.

Depending on what tires you want to run I think the D28 would be plenty fine for desert sandy purposes. That said, I bet the D35 adds maybe 20LBS over the D28 total.

if the d35 is considered 30% stronger and you apply a treatment to a d28 that increases strength anywhere from 30% to 50%(depends on who you ask)then why is it so unreasonable?i agree d35 is supported by the aftermarket better, but for my needs (gearset) there is plenty of choices.keep in mind cryo is free for me,others would have considerable cost for such a solution.i come from drag race and less(weight) is more performance,i guess i'm trying to apply the same mindset to ttb.i figured i would be flooded with d28 failure horror stories but they seem to be less common than i thought.

31x10.50.i have a feeling the majority of failures are the result of being wedged between a rock and a hard place(literally)or trying to spin monster rubber, which does not really apply to me.air time might be a problem for hubs, but i think i'm willing to find out.

31s? Shit, run the D28, it has a wider wheel bearing separation than the D35 as well which couldn't hurt when jumping.
Don't know anything about this truck but I can tell you that's a D28 under there.

Did you read what Alan said at all? I assume not. Go back and read what he said about your treatment and already pitted axle shafts.

Look closer Hahns, that looks like a 35.
No it's not, it has the distinct smaller and round bulge where the pig is that the D28 has, the 35 is larger and has the "dana" shape to it.

no need to get get like that...although his observation is good it doesn't apply to what i'm talking about.
