My credo
Get the job done, correctly, the first time. There's beer to be had.
I got the buttons swapped out. It was super easy. They look much better than the broken ones and the backlight works but the cruise is still inoperative.

But at least my interior looks better. IMG_8645.jpegIMG_8646.jpegIMG_8648.jpegIMG_8649.jpegIMG_8651.jpeg

Edit: full disclosure: I did not replace the wiring harness. I used what was already in the steering wheel as I assumed that the problem was broken buttons. I may go ahead tomorrow and replace the whole wire harness and see if that fixes it. I'd love to have working cruise in this truck.

Easy stuff first... with the board that badly damaged - did the fuse pop?
My guess is you have an open or short.... either on the ground (horn probably wont work either) or on the cruise wires.... time to start hunting..
